About this role.

About Customer.io

Over 9,000 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data.

About the role

Hi, my name is Megan Berry, Senior Director of Product at Customer.io, and I’m looking for a Senior Product Manager to help us turn customer signals into products people actually want.

Our team is six product managers who partner closely with Design and Engineering to launch first-class products that drive customer and business outcomes. You need to be able to synthesize customer research, market research, analytics and your own taste into a customer-first roadmap and set of releases. You will work with a cross-functional team with a high level of autonomy to validate ideas early and help the team ship excellent work. This role focuses on Workflows.

What we value

  • Surfacing customer problems based on qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Driving alignment through effective communication.
  • Performing market research and presenting findings.
  • Using AI to accelerate discovery.
  • Helping our teams ship sooner.

What you’ll do

  • Identify and validate customer problems through user research, usage analytics, partner insights, and AI-powered discovery tools.
  • Rapidly prototype and run focused experiments to test hypotheses and de-risk new ideas early in development.
  • Lead cross-functional planning by aligning Engineering, Design, and business stakeholders around clear product goals and trade-offs.
  • Drive feature strategy and influence roadmaps by proposing initiatives rooted in customer impact and market opportunity.
  • Break down complex projects into incremental, testable releases, using component reuse and system thinking to accelerate delivery.
  • Define product success metrics upfront and track adoption, engagement, and retention to inform iterative improvement.
  • Take on Technology Lead responsibilities for specific initiatives when needed, including data analysis, prototyping, coordinating engineering work, and managing delivery risks.
  • Look at product metrics after launch and work with GTM stakeholders to ensure your launches are successful and create the product and business outcomes we want.

What we’re looking for

  • 7+ years of product management experience, ideally including time in B2B SaaS or platforms that leverage behavioral data for automation or messaging.
  • Strong analytical skills, comfort with metrics dashboards, and experience using data to shape direction and evaluate impact.
  • Proven ability to lead feature development independently, reduce scope, and deliver successful outcomes with tight teams.
  • High product intuition balanced with humility and experimentation. You’re comfortable being wrong and eager to learn quickly.
  • Exceptional written communication and decision-framing abilities, especially in remote and async-first environments.
  • Experience using or developing AI-powered tooling in your product workflow.
  • Technical background with demonstrated ability to build basic web applications, write scripts, and work with engineering teams on topics such as data models, APIs, and performance requirements.
  • Track record of serving as a point of contact or DRI for engineering initiatives, with the ability to choose objectives and navigate trade-offs.
  • Experience with products that involve complex workflows or automations is a plus.

Sample interview questions
How would you identify the most important customer problem to solve in the Workflows product area?

I would triangulate qualitative interviews, support and partner feedback, funnel and usage data, and market signals. I would segment customers by behavior and business context, formulate problem hypotheses, and prioritize the opportunities with the strongest combination of customer pain, strategic fit, and measurable impact.

Describe how you would validate a new workflow automation idea before committing significant engineering capacity.

I would define the target user, desired outcome, assumptions, and success metrics first. Depending on uncertainty, I would use prototypes, concept testing, a concierge workflow, or a limited feature flag experiment, then use the evidence to refine scope, proceed, or stop.

How do you handle disagreement between Engineering, Design, and business stakeholders on roadmap priorities?

I make the decision criteria explicit, including customer impact, strategic alignment, effort, risk, and opportunity cost. I facilitate a discussion around evidence and trade-offs, document the decision and rationale, and ensure the team understands what was deprioritized and why.

Which metrics would you use to evaluate the success of a new workflow feature?

I would use a layered metric set: activation and setup completion for adoption, successful workflow execution and engagement for value delivery, reliability and latency for product quality, and retention or expansion signals for longer-term business impact. The exact metrics would be defined before launch and segmented by customer cohort.

How does your technical background improve your effectiveness as a product manager?

Technical fluency helps me ask better questions about data models, APIs, system constraints, and performance trade-offs. It also lets me collaborate credibly with engineers, prototype lightweight solutions when useful, and break complex initiatives into lower-risk incremental releases.
