Sample interview questions
How would you design OpenTelemetry instrumentation for an AI agent that makes asynchronous model and tool calls?

I would model the agent run as a root span and create child spans for model invocations, tool execution, retrieval, and orchestration steps. I would ensure context propagation works across asyncio tasks, capture useful semantic attributes without exposing sensitive prompts or credentials, and control metric cardinality through carefully selected dimensions.

How do you evaluate the runtime overhead of a Python instrumentation library?

I start with representative benchmarks and profiling to isolate overhead from span creation, context propagation, attribute processing, and exporters. I compare alternatives under realistic concurrency, establish performance budgets, and validate that optimizations preserve API compatibility and correct telemetry semantics.

Describe your approach to contributing a significant change to an upstream open-source project.

I first validate the user problem and existing specifications, then share a concise proposal early with maintainers. I break implementation into reviewable changes, provide tests and documentation, respond constructively to feedback, and ensure the final design is maintainable for the broader community rather than only one downstream user.

How would you handle sensitive data in telemetry from generative-AI workflows?

I would apply privacy-by-design principles: avoid collecting raw prompts and outputs by default, support redaction and configurable capture policies, minimize identifiers, and document retention implications. I would also work with security and product stakeholders to define safe defaults and clear customer controls.

How do you lead an ambiguous technical project as a staff engineer?

I clarify the desired customer and business outcome, identify risks and constraints, and turn uncertainty into explicit design decisions and milestones. I align stakeholders through written proposals and regular communication, delegate effectively, unblock contributors, and use operational and adoption signals to adjust the plan.
