About this role.
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world’s leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.
The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.
The role
We build internal systems to the same standard as our public products: specified, tested, reviewed and observable. We want engineers who enjoy that rigour and take full ownership of what they ship.

- Design and deliver systems and platforms, including intuitive UIs
- Build Go services and APIs that connect many data sources
- Design data models and architecture for connected systems
- Turn data into clear dashboards and visualisations
- Build LLM-powered features into everyday workflows
- Write specs, estimate work and deliver to agreed criteria
- Set a high bar in code review, testing and documentation
- Partner with non-technical colleagues to turn needs into tools
- Mentor engineers and improve how the team works
Who you are
You have deep expertise in at least two of:
- Back-end services in Go
- Modern front-end engineering [React/Svelte/TypeScript]

You also:
- Treat testing, security, performance and accessibility as part of the job
- Handle sensitive people data with care
- Write clearly and work well in a distributed team
- Own your work from first spec to production
Nice to have: Python, Go, React, Svelte, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, a history of building tools for HR, finance or operations.
The ideal candidate will use their passion for experimentation and analytics to build tomorrow’s tech organisation. This team will help us gain insights into the business and our talent pool, and use those insights to improve the experience of working at Canonical.

Sample interview questions
I would define source ownership and data contracts first, then use typed Go clients with authentication, retries, timeouts, and structured error handling. I would model normalized domain entities, choose synchronous or scheduled ingestion based on freshness needs, and expose versioned APIs for the UI. I would add observability, data-quality checks, access controls, and automated tests around integration boundaries.
I would begin with a narrowly defined user problem and a privacy review covering data classification, retention, consent, and vendor controls. The design would minimize data sent to the model, enforce role-based access, redact sensitive fields where possible, and keep auditable logs without exposing protected content. I would validate quality with offline evaluation sets, provide human review for consequential outputs, and monitor for drift and unsafe behavior.
I treat those elements as delivery work rather than a final checklist. I break the scope into vertical slices with acceptance criteria, risk-based test coverage, security review points, and documentation updates included in each slice. This makes progress visible while preserving quality and prevents large unreviewed changes from accumulating near release.
I would run discovery conversations to identify the decision or workflow the stakeholders need to improve, rather than immediately accepting a proposed feature. I would document assumptions, map the current process, define measurable outcomes, and share a small prototype or written specification for feedback. After agreement, I would deliver iteratively and use usage and outcome metrics to refine the solution.
I would combine regular one-to-one support with high-quality asynchronous feedback in design reviews and pull requests. I would explain trade-offs rather than only prescribe changes, create opportunities for engineers to own meaningful work, and make reusable guidance available through documentation and examples. Clear written communication, agreed working norms, and recognition of progress are especially important in a distributed environment.
