Sample interview questions
How do you ensure that a Japanese patent translation preserves both the technical meaning and legal scope of the English source?

I first identify key claim structures, defined terms, and recurring technical expressions. I build or follow an approved terminology base, translate consistently across claims and specifications, and perform a final bilingual review focused on modifiers, antecedent basis, numbering, and scope-sensitive wording.

Describe your experience translating biology or chemistry patent documents.

I have worked with technical material involving scientific processes, compounds, formulations, experimental methods, and biological terminology. My workflow includes researching domain-specific terminology in reliable references and ensuring that the Japanese phrasing remains precise, readable, and consistent with patent conventions.

What is your workflow when using XTM or Trados for a patent project?

I begin by reviewing the translation memory, termbase, client instructions, and file-specific formatting requirements. During translation I apply approved terminology, use QA checks for consistency and tags, then complete a targeted review of claims, numbers, units, chemical names, and repeated segments before delivery.

How would you handle an ambiguous technical term in a source patent?

I would examine the surrounding disclosure, definitions, drawings, prior occurrences, and available client references before selecting the most defensible equivalent. If ambiguity remains material to the translation, I would raise a concise query rather than make an unsupported assumption.

How do you manage a weekly workload of more than 5,000 words while maintaining quality?

I plan capacity around complexity rather than word count alone, prioritize terminology preparation early, and use CAT-tool leverage for repeated content. I schedule dedicated QA and review time before delivery, communicate early about risks, and respond promptly to project questions.
