Sample interview questions
How would you approach designing a workflow for an infrastructure product that has many expert users and complex technical constraints?

I would begin by learning the users' goals, roles, vocabulary, and current workflows through interviews, observation, and product-data review. I would map key tasks and pain points, distinguish frequent actions from advanced configuration, and prototype progressive-disclosure patterns that preserve expert control without overwhelming users. I would validate the direction through usability testing with representative operators and iterate with engineering on feasibility.

Describe how you use UX research when working on a highly technical product.

I combine qualitative research with contextual inquiry and usability testing to understand not only what users say, but how they actually perform tasks. For technical products, I also build domain knowledge through documentation, demos, and conversations with subject-matter experts. I turn findings into prioritized opportunities, journey maps, and testable design hypotheses that the product team can act on.

How do you create consistency across several related products or teams?

I identify repeated interaction patterns, terminology, visual conventions, and accessibility needs, then work with teams to define reusable components and guidance in a design system. Adoption requires more than a component library, so I would document rationale, run reviews, gather feedback, and show how shared patterns improve delivery speed and user confidence. I would also allow carefully governed exceptions where product context truly differs.

How would you communicate a design decision that engineers or executives initially disagree with?

I would explain the user problem, the evidence behind the decision, the expected outcome, and the relevant trade-offs in concise language appropriate to the audience. I would invite concerns early, separate assumptions from facts, and use prototypes or research results to make the discussion concrete. If uncertainty remains, I would propose a measurable experiment or usability test rather than treating design as a matter of preference.

What interests you about designing for cloud and infrastructure tools?

I am motivated by the opportunity to make powerful technology more understandable and efficient for the people who rely on it. Infrastructure tools often involve high-stakes, multi-step work, so thoughtful UX can reduce errors, shorten time to value, and help teams operate confidently. The combination of technical depth, systems thinking, and meaningful user impact is especially compelling to me.
