Sample interview questions
How do you ensure accuracy when translating regulated life-sciences content from English into German?

I start by reviewing approved reference materials, terminology, style guides, and prior translations. I research concepts in reliable medical and regulatory sources, preserve source meaning without unnecessary interpretation, and complete a structured self-review for terminology, numbers, units, formatting, and consistency.

Describe your experience with CAT tools and translation memories.

I use CAT environments to apply approved translation memories and termbases while maintaining context-sensitive judgment. I am comfortable resolving tag issues, running QA checks, managing updates to linguistic assets, and documenting tool or workflow issues through the appropriate process.

What would you do if a source phrase is ambiguous and could affect a clinical or regulatory meaning?

I would not guess. I would review available context and client reference materials, then raise a clear query that explains the ambiguity, the possible interpretations, and the impact on the German target text. I would track the response and apply the approved decision consistently.

How would you provide feedback to a freelance translator whose work repeatedly fails terminology checks?

I would provide specific, constructive examples linked to the glossary, style guide, and project requirements. I would explain the expected correction, offer guidance or training where appropriate, and monitor subsequent deliveries to confirm that the feedback has been understood and applied.

How do you prioritize work when several projects have tight deadlines?

I assess deadlines, word counts, complexity, dependencies, and quality risks, then communicate early with the project team about capacity or conflicts. I sequence work around high-risk regulated content, reserve time for review and queries, and keep stakeholders updated if a dependency could affect delivery.
