Sample interview questions
How would you approach patching a production Tableau Server in a regulated environment?

I would review vendor guidance and security requirements, assess dependencies, document the change and rollback plan, validate backups, and schedule an approved maintenance window. After patching, I would perform health checks, validate authentication and dashboard functionality, monitor logs, and record evidence for compliance and operational documentation.

Describe how you would investigate a dashboard performance issue affecting multiple users.

I would first confirm scope, timing, and affected dashboards, then review Tableau Server health, resource utilization, backgrounder activity, datasource connectivity, and relevant logs. I would collaborate with data engineers to isolate whether the issue originates in the platform, query workload, integration, or underlying infrastructure, then communicate status and remediation clearly.

What controls would you use to manage privileged access across multiple environments?

I would apply least privilege, role-based access, separate nonproduction and production permissions, approval workflows, and periodic access reviews. I would also ensure privileged activity is logged, credentials are managed securely, and access changes are documented to support auditability.

How does AWS GovCloud affect your approach to infrastructure administration?

AWS GovCloud requires heightened attention to approved services, identity controls, logging, encryption, and configuration baselines appropriate to government workloads. I would follow documented organizational controls, maintain evidence for compliance activities, and ensure changes are evaluated against RMF and NIST requirements.

How do you keep runbooks useful during fast-moving operational work?

I write concise runbooks with prerequisites, clear steps, validation checks, escalation paths, and rollback guidance. After incidents or changes, I update them with lessons learned so the documentation reflects the current environment and enables consistent support across the team.
