Product Management Smart Metering Energy Regulation Project Management Cross-Functional Leadership Hardware Strategy Renewable Energy Virtual Power Plant DSO Coordination Regulatory Compliance

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Product Manager position at 1KOMMA5°. With over 5 years of experience in the energy sector, I have a strong track record of navigating regulatory complexities and launching smart metering solutions. My expertise in §14a EnWG and grid integration aligns perfectly with your need for a regulatory expert who can drive product strategy. I am eager to contribute to your mission of transitioning 1.5 million households to renewable energy by 2030.

In my previous role, I led the rollout of intelligent metering systems, coordinating with DSOs and hardware providers to ensure compliance and performance. I thrive in cross-functional environments and am fluent in German and English, enabling seamless communication with technical teams and regulators.

I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can help scale your steering proposition and accelerate the energy transition. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you explain your experience with §14a EnWG and how you would translate it into product requirements?
I have worked extensively with §14a EnWG, which governs the grid-oriented control of consumption and generation assets. In a previous role, I led the development of a smart meter integration that required compliance with this regulation. I translated the legal text into technical specifications for engineering teams, ensuring our hardware could receive and execute switching commands from the grid operator. We also set up monitoring dashboards to track compliance metrics.
Describe a time you managed a cross-functional project involving hardware, software, and external partners.
At my last company, I managed the rollout of a new smart meter family across multiple states. This involved coordinating with hardware vendors for certification, software teams for firmware updates, and field operations for installation. We also worked with utility partners to test integration. I used weekly stand-ups, a shared project timeline, and risk logs to keep everyone aligned. The project launched on time and under budget.
How do you stay updated on regulatory changes in the energy sector, and how do you incorporate them into product strategy?
I subscribe to industry publications like BDEW and VDE FNN newsletters, attend webinars, and participate in working groups. I also maintain a regulatory watch list and collaborate with legal experts. When a new ruling comes out, I assess its impact on our product roadmap, prioritize necessary changes, and communicate them to stakeholders. For example, when BNetzA updated the smart meter gateway requirements, I led a sprint to adapt our software.
What metrics would you use to measure the success of a smart metering and steering product?
Key metrics include the number of devices successfully integrated, latency of steering commands (targeting under 1 second), regulatory compliance rate, customer satisfaction scores, and the percentage of flexible load that is actively managed. Additionally, we should track cost savings for customers and grid operators. A balanced scorecard approach with leading and lagging indicators works best.
How would you handle a situation where a regulatory requirement conflicts with a user-friendly product design?
I would first analyze the conflict to see if there's a compliant workaround that preserves usability. If not, I'd prioritize compliance but document the impact on user experience for future advocacy. I would also engage with regulatory bodies to understand the rationale and propose alternatives. In the end, we must comply, but we can design education materials to help users understand the constraints.

Deine Position

As the energy transition accelerates, flexibilities in the low-voltage grid become increasingly important – and smart metering and steering of distributed energy resources sit at the heart of this shift. • Translate Regulation into Product Requirements: Define and prioritize development requirements for our engineering teams to ensure Heartbeat AI and connected hardware (e.g. §14a Steuerbox + Smart Meter) meets all compliance and performance standards.

  • Drive Hardware Strategy and Rollout: Coordinate testing and lab capacities, prepare key hardware decisions, and operationalize the rollout of intelligent metering systems and Steuerboxen across our customer segment.

  • Manage Service Providers and Market Partners: Own relationships with external service providers as well as DSOs and metering point operators, ensuring smooth collaboration and reliable market communication processes.

  • Lead Cross-Functional Projects & Monitor Performance: Take overarching project responsibility for steering initiatives, define KPIs, monitor target achievement, and derive optimization measures from data and field feedback.
