Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Substation Engineer position at AECOM. With a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and over two years of experience in high voltage substation design, I am confident in my ability to contribute to your team. My expertise includes creating technical designs for substation projects such as transformer replacements and bus re-routes, using AutoCAD and Bentley Microstation. I hold an EIT certification and am familiar with IEEE and NESC standards.

I am particularly drawn to AECOM's commitment to delivering a better world through infrastructure innovation. I thrive in collaborative environments and am adept at working with project managers and engineering leads to ensure project success. I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills to a part-time remote role that offers flexibility while tackling complex challenges. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can add value to AECOM.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Can you describe your experience with physical substation design for high voltage projects (69kV-500kV)?
I have worked on multiple substation projects including new greenfield substations, bay additions, and equipment replacements. My experience includes creating detailed design drawings, performing electrical calculations, and ensuring compliance with IEEE and NESC standards.
How do you approach collaborating with a project team, especially when remote?
I prioritize clear and regular communication through scheduled check-ins, using tools like Teams and email. I ensure that design decisions are documented and shared promptly. I also make myself available for virtual meetings to discuss progress and resolve issues collaboratively.
What is your experience with AutoCAD or Bentley Microstation in substation design?
I am proficient in both AutoCAD and Bentley Microstation. In my previous role, I used AutoCAD for creating one-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings, and Microstation for more detailed physical layouts. I am comfortable with both software platforms.
Can you give an example of a challenging substation design problem you solved?
In a previous project, we needed to upgrade a 230kV substation with limited space. I redesigned the bus layout to accommodate new breakers while maintaining clearance requirements. This involved close coordination with the civil team and iterative modeling to ensure feasibility.
How do you stay updated with industry standards and technology trends in substations?
I regularly read industry publications like IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, participate in webinars, and attend conferences. I also maintain my EIT certification and am working towards my PE license to ensure my knowledge remains current.
