Sample interview questions
How do you balance hands-on technical involvement with your responsibilities as an engineering manager?

I focus my technical involvement on high-leverage activities: architectural decisions, design reviews, risk identification, code-quality standards, and mentoring. I avoid becoming the team's bottleneck by delegating ownership to senior engineers and using regular planning and one-on-one discussions to ensure the team has context and support.

Describe how you would partner with Product Management and Design to deliver a roadmap with competing priorities.

I would establish shared outcomes, clarify customer and business impact, and break major initiatives into sequenced deliverables. I would make technical dependencies, capacity constraints, and risks visible early, then use regular cross-functional planning to make trade-offs explicit and keep stakeholders aligned as priorities change.

What is your approach to improving the performance and growth of engineers at different career levels?

I set clear role expectations, agree on measurable growth goals, and provide frequent, specific feedback tied to observed work and impact. Junior engineers benefit from structured mentorship and scoped ownership, while senior engineers should receive opportunities to lead ambiguous initiatives, influence architecture, and mentor others.

How would you handle a production incident while maintaining a healthy engineering culture?

I would first ensure clear incident ownership, rapid customer-impact assessment, and consistent stakeholder communication. After stabilization, I would facilitate a blameless review focused on system improvements, detection, documentation, and preventive actions, while recognizing the team's response and avoiding individual blame.

How do you create accountability in a remote, asynchronous engineering team?

I create accountability through clearly documented goals, decision records, ownership boundaries, delivery milestones, and operating rhythms that do not depend on constant meetings. I pair this clarity with regular one-on-ones, transparent progress reviews, and an environment where engineers can raise risks early without fear.
