Sample interview questions
Describe an internal tool or automation you built in Python that improved an operational process.

I would explain the business problem, map the manual workflow and failure points, then describe the Python service or automation I implemented. I would quantify the impact using measures such as reduced processing time, fewer errors, improved auditability, or higher adoption, and explain how I documented and maintained it.

How would you design an MCP server that safely exposes internal data-platform capabilities to AI workflows?

I would begin with narrowly scoped, deterministic tools and explicit input and output schemas. I would enforce authentication, authorization, validation, logging, rate limits, and audit trails, while avoiding direct access to sensitive data unless required. I would also add tests and clear error handling so downstream AI workflows receive predictable results.

How do you approach building an API used by multiple internal teams?

I start by clarifying user workflows, ownership, service-level expectations, and data contracts with stakeholders. I design versioned endpoints with validated schemas, least-privilege access controls, meaningful errors, observability, and documentation. Before broad release, I use automated tests and a staged rollout to identify integration issues.

What considerations matter when building a stateful application to ensure an SOP is completed in the correct order?

I would model the process as explicit states and permitted transitions, with server-side validation rather than relying only on the UI. Each transition should be durable, auditable, idempotent where appropriate, and resilient to retries or partial failures. I would also provide clear user feedback, exception paths, and reporting for blocked or incomplete workflows.

How would you collaborate with non-engineering partners to prioritize internal tooling work?

I would use discovery conversations to understand the current process, its volume, risks, user pain points, and desired outcome. I would translate those findings into small, measurable proposals, communicate tradeoffs in plain language, and prioritize work by business impact, reliability risk, and implementation effort. Regular demos and feedback loops would ensure the solution remains aligned with how teams actually work.
