Sample interview questions
Describe an internal platform or integration you owned from initial discovery through production support.

I would explain how I gathered requirements from technical and business users, identified system boundaries and risks, designed the API and data model, delivered in incremental releases, and established observability, documentation, and an ownership model after launch.

How would you design an MCP server that exposes internal data-platform capabilities safely and deterministically?

I would define narrow, well-documented tools with strongly typed input and output schemas, enforce authentication and authorization at the service boundary, validate inputs, apply least-privilege data access, and provide predictable error handling. I would also add logging, audit trails, versioning, rate limits, and tests for both successful and failure paths.

What approach do you use to turn a spreadsheet macro or user-built workflow into a reliable shared service?

I first map the business rules, inputs, outputs, exceptions, and current pain points with the users. Then I separate domain logic from the interface, implement validated APIs or workflow steps, migrate historical edge cases into tests, and release the solution gradually with monitoring and clear user documentation.

How do you ensure deterministic behavior when building LLM-enabled workflows?

I constrain the model’s role with structured prompts and schemas, use tool calls with validated parameters, keep critical business logic outside the model, and add guardrails for retries, fallbacks, and human review where needed. I also evaluate representative cases continuously and log inputs, tool calls, outputs, and failure modes for debugging.

How do you prioritize competing requests from stakeholders when working on a small internal engineering team?

I assess requests by business impact, risk reduction, effort, dependencies, and alignment with platform strategy. I make tradeoffs transparent, propose phased delivery when useful, and prioritize reusable solutions that reduce repeated manual work rather than repeatedly solving isolated requests.

About the role:

We’re looking for a Senior Enterprise Engineer to join our Data team. In this role, you’ll help architect and build the interconnected systems that run the business, leveraging third party tools, MCP servers, internal APIs, lightweight web apps, and automated workflows. You’ll work closely with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand needs and ship reliable, well-crafted solutions.

This is a role for a seasoned Python engineer who’s comfortable owning complex projects end-to-end, from scoping and architecture to deployment and maintenance. Our team is small, high-trust, and values clarity, maintainability, and getting the details right.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and maintain MCP servers that expose data platform capabilities and enterprise business systems to internal tools and AI workflows in a deterministic way
  • Build internal APIs to enrich the ecosystem of programmatically addressable resources
  • Build lightweight web apps and dashboards using Streamlit to support internal processes
  • Develop stateful applications that ensure SOP of various processes are followed in compliance with policy
  • Develop and manage automated workflows and pipelines in Python
  • Manage a SDLC to convert high value macros and other tools built by less-technical users into standalone services and low code workflows that can be used by multiple internal teams
  • Define coding standards and best practices for interacting with AI agents across Branch
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Branch to scope and deliver solutions
  • Write clean, well-documented code and contribute to a culture of technical quality

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • 5+ years of professional Python engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience designing and building APIs (FastAPI or Flask preferred)
  • 3+ years of experience with full-stack Python development
  • Experience building or working with MCP servers
  • Experience with Deterministic LLM programming (ie. LangChain, UserPromptSubmit, PostToolUse)
  • Familiarity with OLTP databases and caching technologies
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and working with relational databases
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Proven ability to own the full lifecycle of a project

Nice to Have

  • Background in fintech, payments, or financial services
  • Experience with Streamlit or similar lightweight UI frameworks
  • Familiarity with workflow automation tools (ie. Airflow, Prefect, n8n)
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (ie. AWS, GCP, Azure)

Compensation:

The base salary range for this role is $175-190k.
