About this role.
FastSpring is hiring a senior Java engineer for its Payments team to build highly available systems for payment processing, subscription billing, settlement, refunds, and reporting. The role leads feature design, third-party payment integrations, production troubleshooting, and delivery-process improvements within an agile SaaS environment. It requires 10+ years of commercial Java development plus strong PostgreSQL/NoSQL, REST API, AWS, testing, Linux, and web development experience. The engineer will partner with Product, Risk, Finance, and Compliance to implement regulated payment capabilities, including PCI-DSS, PSD2/SCA, and 3DS2, while mentoring junior engineers.

Sample interview questions
I would define clear API contracts, use idempotency keys for payment-changing requests, implement retries with exponential backoff for transient failures, and use asynchronous processing where appropriate. I would also persist request and response state, reconcile processor webhooks, monitor failure patterns, and provide operational tooling for safe replay and investigation.
I use an idempotency strategy spanning the client request, internal service, and processor call. A durable idempotency record keyed to the business operation stores the initial outcome, allowing repeated requests to return the same result rather than initiating another charge; database constraints and carefully designed state transitions provide additional protection.
I first assess customer impact, stabilize the system through rollback, traffic controls, or feature flags, and communicate status to stakeholders. I then use logs, metrics, traces, and transaction records to isolate the failure, validate the fix with targeted tests, and follow up with a blameless post-incident review, monitoring improvements, and corrective backlog items.
I would minimize the systems that handle sensitive card data, rely on tokenization and approved payment-provider capabilities, enforce encryption and least-privilege access, and maintain auditable controls. For PSD2/SCA, I would design clear authentication and challenge flows, support 3DS2 outcomes and exemptions, and work closely with Compliance and Risk to validate requirements before release.
I identify the end-to-end business flow, isolate independently deployable capabilities, and establish contracts and observability before enabling customer traffic. I use feature flags, backward-compatible schema and API changes, staged rollouts, and measurable acceptance criteria so each release reduces risk while moving toward the complete capability.
