Sample interview questions
How would you design a resilient ETL/ELT pipeline in an AWS-hosted data lake?

I would begin by defining source contracts, schema expectations, freshness requirements, and security classifications. I would implement staged ingestion, validation and transformation layers, idempotent processing, orchestration with retries and alerts, and lineage-oriented logging so failures can be diagnosed and data can be safely reprocessed.

What steps would you take to troubleshoot a slow materialized view or reporting query in PostgreSQL?

I would review query plans, indexes, join cardinality, table statistics, refresh behavior, and resource utilization. Based on findings, I would optimize SQL and indexes, consider partitioning or incremental refresh patterns, validate improvements against representative workloads, and document performance tradeoffs.

How do you ensure data quality in a production analytics platform?

I establish automated checks for schema validity, completeness, uniqueness, referential integrity, timeliness, and acceptable value ranges. I also monitor pipeline outcomes, alert on threshold breaches, retain audit records, and work with data consumers to define business rules and remediation ownership.

How would you apply FISMA and NIST 800-53 principles to data engineering work?

I would translate applicable controls into practical engineering measures such as least-privilege access, encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging, secure secret management, vulnerability-aware dependency practices, retention controls, and documented operational procedures. I would partner with security and compliance teams to maintain evidence and address control gaps.

Describe how you communicate a data architecture decision to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

I tailor the discussion to the audience by connecting the decision to outcomes such as reliability, reporting speed, risk reduction, and cost. I use concise diagrams and documented assumptions, explain key tradeoffs and alternatives, confirm ownership and next steps, and maintain an accessible record for future implementation and review.
