About this role.
ClickUp is hiring a Senior AI Engineer to own and advance the AI systems powering its voice platform. The role focuses on low-latency streaming speech recognition, voice activity detection, audio processing, context-aware transcription, and LLM-based post-processing. This engineer will also build voice-to-action workflows that turn natural-language requests into structured workspace commands and evaluate ASR providers for quality, latency, and cost. The position partners closely with product and platform teams to deliver voice capabilities across desktop, mobile, web, and browser-extension products.

Sample interview questions
I would separate audio capture, streaming transport, VAD, ASR inference, post-processing, and client rendering into observable components with clear latency budgets. I would support partial and final hypotheses, use VAD to reduce unnecessary inference, and instrument word-error rate, endpointing delay, real-time factor, and failure rates. I would also design graceful fallbacks for network interruptions and provider outages.
I would build a tightly scoped context service that supplies permitted user names, team names, project terminology, and custom vocabulary at inference or post-processing time. Context would be minimized, access-controlled, and cached with short lifetimes, while offline evaluation would compare accuracy and false-correction rates against a context-free baseline. I would ensure users can understand and control how their workspace data influences voice recognition.
I would create a representative evaluation corpus covering accents, noise conditions, domain vocabulary, languages, device types, and real user utterance patterns. The scorecard would measure WER, entity and mention accuracy, streaming latency, endpointing quality, availability, cost per audio minute, and operational complexity. The final recommendation would be based on segmented results and expected business impact rather than a single aggregate accuracy score.
I would use a structured intent-and-slot schema with constrained tool calling, validation rules, permission checks, and explicit confirmation for destructive or high-impact actions. The system should resolve ambiguity through clarification rather than guessing, retain an auditable action preview, and provide simple undo paths. Evaluation would include task-completion rate, incorrect-action rate, clarification rate, and user trust feedback.
I would first profile the full request path to identify whether model inference, tokenization, network calls, or queueing dominates. I would apply incremental processing, smaller specialized models or prompts, batching only where it does not hurt interactive latency, caching for repeated entities, and asynchronous refinement after an initial result. I would validate changes against both quality metrics and p95 end-to-end latency, since speed improvements are not useful if formatting or entity accuracy regresses.

Role Overview
You’ll own and evolve the AI systems behind ClickUp’s voice platform: real-time streaming transcription, intelligent reformatting, context-aware mention detection, and voice-to-action pipelines. This is a high-impact, hands-on role where you’ll push the boundaries of what voice interfaces can do inside a productivity tool used by millions.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and optimize real-time speech-to-text pipelines (streaming ASR, VAD, audio processing)
Improve transcription accuracy through context injection (user names, teams, custom vocabulary, language detection)
Develop and maintain LLM-powered post-processing (grammar correction, filler removal, mention resolution, formatting)
Build voice-to-action systems that parse natural language into structured workspace commands
Evaluate, benchmark, and integrate ASR models (Whisper, AssemblyAI, Fireworks, etc.) for cost, latency, and accuracy
Collaborate with product and platform teams to ship voice features across MAX Desktop, Mobile, Web, and Browser Extension
Explore multimodal AI capabilities (screen + voice + text) for next-gen assistant experiences
