Sample interview questions
I would first align with product and stakeholders on customer outcomes, operational constraints, and the near-term roadmap. I would establish clear ownership boundaries, hire or organize for complementary strengths, and define lightweight operating practices for planning, decision records, reviews, and incident learning. I would then use regular one-on-ones and measurable delivery and quality signals to develop the team over time.
I clarify the decision to be made, document known constraints and assumptions, and identify a small set of viable options. I evaluate them against reliability, security, maintainability, delivery speed, and future flexibility, involving relevant engineers early. I then write down the decision and its trade-offs, define validation milestones, and revisit assumptions as new evidence emerges.
I look for patterns across expectations, work quality, collaboration, and delivery rather than centering one incident. In a direct but supportive conversation, I share specific examples, understand root causes, agree on a development plan, and provide regular feedback and resources. Progress should be observable through clear milestones and sustained behavior over multiple weeks or months.
I would encourage AI use for tasks such as exploration, drafting, testing, and documentation, while making accountability for correctness explicit. The team would retain code review, testing, security checks, and architectural standards regardless of how code was produced. I would also share effective workflows, measure where AI improves cycle time or quality, and address misuse quickly.
I start with the user or business decision, then explain the available options in plain language with their cost, risk, timing, and expected impact. I recommend a path while being transparent about uncertainties and what would change the recommendation. Written decision briefs and concise asynchronous updates help stakeholders respond effectively without unnecessary meetings.

What you’ll do
Lead our new Prepaid Cards team. Prepaid cards are one of Tremendous’s largest catalog categories, already processing millions of cards a year. We’re expanding into new card types and new countries, and need an EM to build and lead the team as we do so.
Grow your engineers’ careers through 1:1s, thoughtful feedback, and coaching.
Own technical quality — through code reviews, architecture decisions, and setting standards your team is proud of.

How we manage at Tremendous:
We coach developmentally, not reactively. Growing our engineers is a multi-month effort, not a response to the last incident. We address patterns, not one-offs.
Fix what’s broken. You and your PM decide how your team works. If the process isn’t serving you, change it — you don’t need permission.
Async-first, low-meeting culture. We default to writing things down. You will not be stuck in back-to-back meetings.
Stable ground to build on. Our infrastructure is reliable, we rarely have incidents, and our tech debt is under control. You’ll be leading a team that ships — not one stuck firefighting.
What you’ll bring
8+ years of experience in software engineering, including at least 2 years leading a team as a manager or tech lead.
Great technical judgment. You are consistently right on technical approaches, and can explain why.
Strong communication skills. You can write technical briefs and explain technical concepts to cross functional stakeholders.
Solid product intuition. You generally have a good sense of what to build and can articulate product initiatives to engineers on the team.
Lead on AI adoption. You use AI heavily in your own work and help your team do the same — without lowering the bar on quality. “I used AI” is never an excuse for slop, and you’ll hold your team to that.
A magnet for talent. Other engineers and teammates love working with you.
High empathy. You care about your teammates and our users. You can put yourself in their shoes.
Our stack: Ruby on Rails; Typescript + React; PostgreSQL; Google Cloud. Tech stack knowledge is a plus, but not required.
What’s cool about the role
We invest in your tools. Everyone has a $5k/month budget for AI tools. Use it.
Competitive pay and equity. The base salary for this role is $250,000 to $300,000.
Fully remote. Work from anywhere in the Americas.
