Sample interview questions
I would define clear service boundaries, use an event-driven design with a durable broker such as Kafka, and make consumers idempotent to safely handle retries. I would partition workloads by a stable key, such as player or campaign ID, use transactional persistence where needed, and add observability for lag, error rates, latency, and business-event correctness.
I would avoid blocking the event loop, use asynchronous I/O carefully, enforce timeouts and cancellation, and apply bounded concurrency for downstream calls. For CPU-intensive work, I would use worker threads or separate services, while TypeScript contracts, runtime validation, and comprehensive tests help keep interfaces reliable.
I would begin with metrics and distributed traces to isolate whether latency originates in application logic, a database, a broker, or a dependent service. I would reproduce the bottleneck where possible, optimize the highest-impact path through indexing, query changes, caching, batching, or connection-pool tuning, then validate the change with load tests and production monitoring.
I use versioned API contracts, explicit timeouts, retry policies that avoid retry storms, correlation IDs, and clear error semantics. For asynchronous workflows, I design for at-least-once delivery through idempotency keys, dead-letter handling, schema compatibility, and operational dashboards for failed or delayed messages.
I would first assess customer impact and stabilize the service through rollback, traffic shifting, or feature-flag disablement. Next, I would use logs, metrics, traces, and recent-change history to identify the cause, communicate status clearly, and document corrective actions such as tests, alerts, runbooks, or architectural safeguards to prevent recurrence.
