Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the data scope, source formats, target schema, business rules and acceptance criteria. I would profile and map the data, build repeatable extraction and transformation scripts, validate results through reconciliations and test loads, then execute the production migration with a rollback plan and clear stakeholder communication.
I would inspect the query plan, review joins and filters, check indexing and data volumes, and identify blocking or long-running operations. I would then test targeted improvements such as indexing, query rewrites, batching, or staging tables, while validating that the changes preserve data accuracy.
I use record counts, control totals, duplicate and null checks, referential-integrity checks, and field-level comparisons for critical data. I also work with business users to validate representative scenarios in the new system and document any approved exceptions or remediation actions.
I would clarify the revised requirement and its business priority, assess its impact on scope, data mapping, timelines and risks, and communicate that assessment to the customer and project manager. I would then agree a documented path forward, whether that is incorporating the change, deferring it, or proposing an alternative solution.
I use APIs to review available endpoints, authenticate requests, test payloads and confirm response behaviour. In Postman, I would create organised collections and environments, test expected and error responses, and use the findings to support integration troubleshooting and clear technical documentation.
We’re looking for a Technical Consultant to help deliver customer data migrations and system implementations. You’ll work directly with clients and internal implementation teams to convert customer data onto our platform, stand up new customer systems and work on internal technical projects – all while keeping projects on time, on budget, and running smoothly.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Migrate customer data from legacy/source systems onto our platform, including writing and troubleshooting custom scripts where needed
- Write and run SQL queries to extract, transform, and validate customer data
- Stand up and configure new customer systems/environments as part of implementation
- Migrate databases to our Azure cloud platform
- Communicate directly with customers on requirements, timelines, and expectations
- Work with Project Managers and Implementation teams to flag risks and keep delivery on track
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of our products, tools, and migration methodologies
- Keep activity reports and project documentation up to date within agreed SLAs
- Follow company security policies – protecting customer data and reporting any issues
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
- 1–3 years of relevant technical consulting or data engineering experience preferred
- Experience writing and troubleshooting SQL (ideally Microsoft SQL Server / T-SQL – stored procedures, functions, triggers, indexes)
- Basic knowledge of REST/SOAP APIs and tools like Postman
- Basic knowledge of IIS
- Comfortable communicating with customers on technical requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field or equivalent work experience
- Able to work independently and manage your own workload
WHAT WOULD ALSO BE AWESOME:
- Experience with an ETL toolset (e.g. SSIS)
- Experience with other RDBMS platforms (Oracle, MySQL, Postgres)
- Experience with BI Tools (PowerBI, Sigma, Izenda)
- Familiarity with EDI/integration platforms (e.g. Boomi)
- Advanced Excel/data manipulation skills
