Sample interview questions
How would you identify the primary drivers of an unexpected increase in a client's pharmacy spend?

I would first validate the reporting population and measurement period, then decompose the change into utilization, unit cost, drug mix, specialty-drug exposure, formulary changes, channel shifts, and rebate impacts. I would quantify each driver, investigate material outliers, and present the findings with focused recommendations such as formulary optimization, network changes, or utilization-management opportunities.

Describe how you would explain a complex rebate projection to a nontechnical client executive.

I would lead with the business implication, such as the expected net-cost impact and the assumptions that matter most. I would use a concise visual showing gross spend, expected rebates, timing, and variance scenarios, then explain the key drivers in plain language while clearly noting data limitations and risks.

What controls would you use to ensure a client-facing financial report is accurate?

I would establish reconciliations to source claims and eligibility data, automated reasonableness checks, version control, documented calculation logic, and peer review for material deliverables. I would also compare outputs against prior periods and contractual definitions to identify unexplained variances before delivery.

Tell us about a time you found the root cause of a difficult financial-data issue.

In a strong example, I would describe isolating a material variance by tracing the metric from the client report through transformation logic to source data. I would explain how I tested hypotheses, partnered with technical stakeholders to correct the issue, validated the fix, and communicated the client impact and prevention steps clearly.

How would you partner with Account Managers who are less comfortable presenting data?

I would tailor analyses to the client's decisions, provide a clear narrative and a limited number of decision-ready visuals, and coach the Account Manager on key messages and likely questions. Before the meeting, I would rehearse the presentation, clarify assumptions, and ensure they can confidently explain both the recommendation and its financial rationale.

Your mission is to translate complex pharmacy benefit data into actionable financial insights for our clients. You will be a trusted advisor to both internal Account Management leadership and client financial teams, ensuring that every strategic decision is backed by rigorous analysis and a deep understanding of SmithRx financial components.

What you will do:

  • Support the resolution of complex client scenarios by conducting deep-dive data research and root-cause analysis.
  • Partner with the account team to identify cost drivers, utilization shifts, and clinical opportunities within a client’s portfolio to recommend plan design changes that mitigate spend.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Account Management and the Reporting/Data Analyst teams to ensure client reporting needs are technically feasible and strategically sound.
  • Interpret pharmacy claims data, trend analysis, and rebate projections to provide “the story behind the numbers” for client presentations and Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs).
  • Oversee the integrity of client-facing financial reports, ensuring data aligns with contractual obligations and client expectations.
  • Work on behalf of the Account Management team, collaborating with internal technical teams to improve automated reporting tools and identify product gaps based on client feedback and data limitations.
  • Assess financial data for indicators of client attrition risk and work with Account Managers to develop data-driven mitigation strategies.
  • Act as a data mentor to Account Managers, coaching them on how to interpret financial metrics and present data-heavy slides effectively.
  • Participate in existing and prospective client meetings.

What you will bring to SmithRx:

  • Deep fluency in the pharmacy benefits space, including an understanding of AWP, NADAC, rebates, formulary impact, and pharmacy network modeling.
  • 5+ years of experience in data analysis, financial underwriting, or actuarial support within the healthcare and/or PBM industry.
  • Strong command of data visualization tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, PowerBI) and advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, modeling).
  • The unique ability to translate “data-speak” into executive-level insights for C-suite leadership and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A passion for solving difficult problems in partnership with both technical developers and account managers.
  • An obsession with data accuracy and a disciplined work ethic that ensures deliverables are met with little to no direction.
  • Ability to observe scenarios from the client’s financial point of view and provide proactive, honest, and transparent recommendations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Healthcare Administration, or equivalent experience required.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15-20% to client meetings
