Sample interview questions
How would you design a highly available identity-verification service that must handle unpredictable traffic spikes?

I would start by defining latency, availability, consistency, and fraud-risk requirements. I would use stateless horizontally scalable services behind load balancing, durable asynchronous queues for noncritical processing, replicated data stores with clear consistency boundaries, and rate limiting or backpressure to protect dependencies. I would also establish observability, capacity testing, multi-region recovery objectives, and graceful-degradation paths.

Describe a large technical initiative you led from ambiguous requirements through production delivery.

I would explain how I clarified outcomes and constraints with stakeholders, wrote an architecture proposal, decomposed the work into milestones, and assigned clear ownership across engineers. I would highlight risk management, design reviews, progress communication, and measurable results such as improved reliability, lower latency, or reduced operational burden.

How do you make architectural decisions that balance immediate delivery needs with long-term maintainability?

I evaluate options against expected scale, operational cost, team ownership, security, and reversibility. I prefer the simplest solution that meets current requirements while preserving clear extension points, and I document tradeoffs in an ADR or design document. For irreversible or high-risk choices, I seek early review and validate assumptions with prototypes or load tests.

What practices would you use to improve reliability in a distributed backend platform?

I would define SLIs and SLOs, instrument key request paths, and use error budgets to prioritize reliability work. Core practices include timeouts, retries with jitter, idempotency, circuit breakers, dead-letter handling, dependency isolation, safe deployments, and regular incident reviews that result in concrete preventive actions.

How do you mentor engineers while maintaining a high engineering bar?

I combine timely, actionable code and design feedback with collaborative problem solving. I tailor guidance to the engineer's experience, explain the reasoning behind standards, and create opportunities for ownership such as leading a design review or incident follow-up. I also ensure expectations are explicit and recognize progress as engineers build independence.
