Sample interview questions
Describe a mobile experience you designed that improved repeat engagement or retention.

I would explain the user behavior problem, research insights, hypotheses, and the mobile flows I designed. I would then share measurable outcomes such as improvements in activation, weekly active use, task completion, or retention, along with lessons learned from iteration.

How would you simplify a complex fertility or health journey for members with different needs and levels of knowledge?

I would begin with member research and journey mapping to understand moments of uncertainty, emotional sensitivity, and decision-making needs. I would use progressive disclosure, clear information hierarchy, supportive content, and personalized pathways while validating comprehension and accessibility through usability testing.

How do you approach information architecture and navigation for a product with multiple connected programs?

I use content inventories, user mental models, task analysis, and prototype testing to define a coherent structure. I prioritize core recurring tasks, create clear relationships between programs, and validate that members can understand where they are, what is relevant, and what to do next.

What is your process for using qualitative and quantitative evidence in product-design decisions?

I combine behavioral data with interviews, usability testing, surveys, and support feedback to identify both what is happening and why. I frame testable hypotheses, define success metrics with product partners, and use findings to prioritize design decisions and subsequent experiments.

How have you incorporated AI into your design practice or designed AI-powered product experiences?

I use AI thoughtfully to accelerate exploration, synthesis, and prototyping while maintaining human review and privacy standards. For AI-powered features, I focus on user control, transparency, clear limitations, safe fallback paths, and testing whether the experience provides reliable value rather than novelty.

The Opportunity 🚀

We’re looking for a Lead Product Designer to shape the end-to-end experience for members. You’ll own design from concept through execution for our mobile app priorities. You’ll report to our Director of Product and be the design lead for this team, with the opportunity to pair with product designers working on other parts of the Carrot experience.

The work spans two levels. You’ll go deep on individual mobile-first experiences, including Sprints, our program for members working on their metabolic health alongside fertility, pregnancy, and menopause care. You’ll also design how distinct pieces of the member experience fit together into one seamless mobile experience.

What You’ll Own 💼

In this role, you will:

  • Own mobile design end to end — concept through high-fidelity execution on iOS and Android.
  • Bring the pieces together — design the information architecture and navigation that make distinct parts of the member experience feel like one product.
  • Design for return, not just first use — drive adoption and retention through experiences that earn a member’s attention daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Make complexity feel simple — turn large, dynamic, nuanced information into something members trust at a glance.
  • Partner closely with our Content Designer so visual and written communication land as one experience.
  • Ground decisions in evidence — run qualitative and quantitative research, and use it to back what we build.
  • Grow our design system with accessibility, consistency, and scalability in mind.

What Success Looks Like 📈

In your first 12–18 months, you will have:

  • Shipped design work that measurably moved member adoption and engagement, with metrics you can point to.
  • Conducted user research and testing and developed a sharp sense of updates to best drive member engagement and business goals.
  • Contributed to our design system- letting teams ship faster and more consistently.

About You ✨

You likely have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years in product/UX design, with a portfolio of mobile-first work and end-to-end ownership of complex, multi-step journeys
  • Experience building and working on consumer apps focused on daily and weekly active usage
  • A track record designing for engagement and retention — habit formation, behavior change, wellness, or similar
  • AI as a core part of your design practice, plus experience designing AI-powered product experiences
  • Systems thinking to create experiences that feel clean and simple for users
  • Strong visual and interaction craft, hands-on prototyping, and fluency with building products people love to use
  • Experience leading user research or usability testing

Nice to Have ⭐

While not required, we would be especially excited if you bring:

  • Experience with behavior change frameworks or gamification
  • Experience helping teammates develop as designers
  • Empathy and sensitivity to the challenges of healthcare journeys

Why This Role Matters 🧡

Fertility, pregnancy, and menopause care unfold over years, not appointments. Much of what shapes a member’s outcome happens between clinical visits. Nobody returns to an app out of obligation — they return because it’s useful, respects their time, and doesn’t make them feel judged. Design is the difference.

Engagement here isn’t a vanity metric; it’s how the product does anything at all for a member’s health. You will shape that experience, with the opportunity to put your work in front of millions of people.

Interview Process 🤝

We believe in a thoughtful and transparent interview process designed to create alignment for both candidates and our team.

For this role, candidates can expect:

  1. Recruiter Screen — 30 minutes
  2. Hiring Manager Interview — 30 minutes
  3. Portfolio Interview — 1 hour
  4. Final Round Interviews — 2 hours

Throughout the process, we will share additional context about the team, business priorities, customer landscape, and what success looks like in this role.

Why Candidates Join Carrot 🌍

Carrot offers the opportunity to do meaningful work in service of a deeply human mission.

Highlights include:

  • A mission-driven company focused on expanding access to fertility and family-forming care globally.
  • A high-growth environment where leaders are empowered to shape strategy and drive impact.
  • Competitive compensation, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
  • Flexible Time Off and a culture that actively encourages employees to recharge.
  • Comprehensive parental leave and family-forming benefits.
  • A collaborative, inclusive, and values-driven culture.
  • The opportunity to work alongside passionate, thoughtful teammates committed to improving healthcare outcomes worldwide.

Compensation 💰

Carrot offers a holistic Total Rewards package designed to support our employees in all aspects of their life inside and outside of work, including health and wellness benefits, retirement savings plans, short- and long-term incentives, parental leave, family-forming assistance, and a competitive compensation package. The starting base salary for this position will range from $145,000-$170,000. Actual compensation may vary from posted base salary depending on your confirmed job-related skills and experience.
