About this role.
Lightspeed is seeking a Staff Product Designer to lead end-to-end design for core retail point-of-sale experiences used by tens of thousands of merchants. The role centers on simplifying complex, high-frequency workflows while preserving reliability and familiarity in a mature, at-scale product. The designer will conduct merchant research, prototype and validate solutions, collaborate closely with engineering, and contribute to the shared design system. This senior individual-contributor role also includes mentoring designers, raising design quality through critique, and applying AI tools to improve design exploration and validation.

Sample interview questions
I would first study current behavior through analytics, merchant interviews, observation, and usability testing to identify the true sources of friction. I would preserve familiar mental models where they support speed and confidence, prototype targeted improvements, and validate them against realistic tasks before release. I would also define success measures such as task completion time, error rate, adoption, and support-contact reduction.
I would explain the user outcome and non-negotiable usability principles, then work with engineering early to understand platform constraints and implementation trade-offs. From there, I would explore phased approaches or alternative interaction patterns that preserve the essential experience. The goal is a solution that is both meaningfully better for users and feasible for the team to ship and maintain.
I involve research during problem framing by synthesizing qualitative feedback, workflow observations, support themes, and quantitative signals into clear opportunity areas. I share evidence in accessible artifacts such as journey maps, clips, and prioritized insights so partners can make decisions together. This makes research a strategic input to roadmap and scope, not a final design checkpoint.
It means creating leverage through clear product thinking, reusable patterns, constructive critique, and active mentorship. I would make decisions and trade-offs visible, help teams align around customer outcomes, and raise quality through practical collaboration rather than gatekeeping. I would also invest in the design system and shared practices so improvements benefit teams beyond my immediate area.
I would use AI selectively for activities such as exploring variants, summarizing research inputs, accelerating prototype preparation, or generating test ideas, while retaining human judgment for customer context and final decisions. I would assess usefulness through speed, quality, accuracy, and whether the tool improves—not obscures—team collaboration. I would also ensure outputs are reviewed carefully and handled in accordance with privacy and data-security requirements.
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by 👋
Are you actively looking for a new opportunity? Or just checking the market? Well… you might just be in the right place!
We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to join our Retail point-of-sale design team in Montreal. You’ll design for products that tens of thousands of merchants rely on every single day to run their stores — where a confusing flow isn’t an inconvenience, it’s a line of customers at the counter. Design at this scale is a different sport: every improvement lands with enormous reach, and every decision has to earn the trust of people whose livelihood runs through our software.
This is a role for a designer who finds the hard problems more interesting than the shiny ones: simplifying deeply established workflows without breaking what merchants depend on, finding elegant solutions within real technical constraints, and knowing when familiarity is a feature — and when it’s holding users back.
Location: Montreal (HQ) preferred, working in-office alongside the team; open to other locations in eastern Canada.
What you’ll be doing:
Own end-to-end design for core point-of-sale experiences — from problem framing through polished, shipped product — and be accountable for their quality and outcomes.
Make complicated flows feel simple: distill dense, high-frequency merchant workflows into clear, fast, confidence-inspiring experiences.
Design with real-world constraints as creative fuel — partnering closely with engineering to find solutions that are both excellent and feasible in mature, at-scale systems.
Ground decisions in evidence: drive your own research and testing with real merchants, so improvements are built on how people actually work, not assumptions.
Think in systems: strengthen consistency across the wider point-of-sale portfolio, contributing patterns and improvements back to our shared design system.
Multiply the team: mentor other designers, raise the bar through critique, and bring a point of view that makes the work around you better.
Put AI to work in your craft — using modern tools to explore, prototype, and validate faster, and modelling new ways of working for the team.
What you need to bring:
8+ years of product design experience at product-driven tech companies, with measurable impact on shipped products.
A portfolio that shows strong fundamentals, polished UI craft, and complex workflows made simple.
Experience designing for mature, at-scale products — and the judgment to know when to simplify, when to modernize, and when to leave well enough alone.
A track record of partnering with engineering to navigate technical constraints and still ship excellent work.
Fluency with prototyping and research methods to validate decisions and shape product direction.
Active use of AI tools in your design workflow, and curiosity about how they’re changing the craft.
Strong communication skills — able to build alignment with cross-functional, global partners.
As a global company with employees and clients outside of Quebec, fluency in English as a working language is required for this position.
