Sample interview questions
How would you assess a new high school student's math needs before beginning regular tutoring sessions?

I would begin with a conversation about the student's goals, coursework, prior challenges, and confidence level, followed by a short diagnostic covering prerequisite and current-topic skills. I would use the results to identify misconceptions, set measurable goals, and create a targeted lesson sequence.

How do you explain an Algebra II concept to a student who is struggling?

I break the concept into small steps, connect it to prerequisite knowledge, and use a clear visual or real-world example. I ask the student to explain each step in their own words and then guide them through progressively less-supported practice to confirm understanding.

How would you adapt a lesson for a student preparing for SAT Math?

I would identify the student's weakest tested domains and combine focused skill instruction with timed, SAT-style questions. I would also teach error-analysis habits, efficient strategies, and pacing techniques, then use performance data to refine future sessions.

What methods do you use to keep one-on-one online tutoring engaging?

I use an interactive whiteboard, frequent check-in questions, collaborative problem solving, and varied examples based on student interests. I balance direct explanation with guided practice so the student remains actively involved throughout the lesson.

How do you provide feedback after a tutoring session?

I provide concise feedback that highlights what the student did well, the specific skills that need reinforcement, and practical next steps. I also share a small set of targeted practice problems or study actions and revisit progress in the next session.
