Sample interview questions
I would begin with a fact base covering buyer demand, seller supply, category economics, conversion, repeat purchase behavior, and market trends by segment. I would then prioritize a small set of growth levers—such as strategic seller acquisition, assortment quality, trust signals, pricing guidance, and buyer retention—with clear owners, milestones, and P&L targets. The strategy would be reviewed regularly against market cycles and adjusted without losing its long-term direction.
I manage a P&L through a disciplined operating cadence that separates leading indicators from lagging results. When demand or supply shifts, I assess the impact on revenue, margin, conversion, and acquisition costs, then make targeted decisions on assortment, seller terms, marketing investment, or operational priorities. I communicate trade-offs clearly so teams understand both the decision and the financial rationale.
I prepare thoroughly by understanding the seller’s business, alternatives, commercial value, and the boundaries of an acceptable agreement. During discussions, I am direct about expectations and economics while focusing on shared long-term value rather than short-term concessions. Following through on commitments and documenting next steps helps preserve trust even when the negotiation is challenging.
I establish a clear structure: shared objectives, defined decision rights, measurable outcomes, and a regular performance cadence. I create space for managers to raise concerns and contribute ideas, while holding them accountable for delivery and team health. I also adapt communication styles across cultures and ensure that priorities are consistently understood across the organization.
I would identify the few metrics that best explain category health, such as supply quality, sell-through, conversion, average selling price, margin, and seller retention. I would segment those metrics by product type, geography, seller cohort, and buyer behavior to isolate the highest-impact opportunities. The outcome would be an action-oriented plan with a clear hypothesis, expected financial effect, accountable owner, and review date.
