Sample interview questions
How have you managed a multi-state corporate income and indirect-tax compliance calendar?

I start by documenting every entity, jurisdiction, filing requirement, due date, owner, and source-data dependency in a centralized calendar. I establish early data deadlines, use review checklists and reconciliations, and track completion status through filing and payment confirmation. After each cycle, I identify recurring bottlenecks and automate or standardize inputs where possible.

Describe a time you improved a tax process or control. What was the result?

I would first map the existing workflow and identify control gaps, manual steps, and reconciliation breaks. I have improved processes by defining standardized workpapers, assigning clear review ownership, and tying tax-account reconciliations to close procedures. The result is typically more reliable support, faster reviews, and a clearer audit trail for internal and external auditors.

How would you approach an IRS or state tax audit?

I would assess the notice and requested periods immediately, establish a response plan, preserve relevant records, and assign accountable owners for each information request. I would reconcile all submitted schedules to filed returns and financial records, maintain a controlled request log, and communicate material exposure or decisions to leadership and outside advisors. My goal would be a complete, timely, and well-supported response while protecting the company’s position.

What is your approach to tax accounting and tax-related balance-sheet reconciliations?

I ensure each tax account has a documented purpose, source support, preparer, reviewer, and reconciliation cadence. I compare book activity, tax returns, notices, payments, and supporting schedules, investigate variances promptly, and prepare adjusting entries with clear documentation. I also make sure the close process supports quarterly projections and annual return preparation.

How do you communicate new tax-law developments to non-tax stakeholders?

I translate technical developments into a concise summary of the business impact, affected entities or transactions, financial exposure, required decisions, and implementation timeline. I tailor the level of detail for executives, accounting teams, and operational partners, then document agreed actions and ownership. This helps stakeholders act quickly without needing to interpret technical tax language themselves.
