Sample interview questions
I would first validate source-system data and timing, then break the variance into meaningful drivers such as volume, pricing, mix, customer performance, and recognition timing. I would reconcile findings with Revenue and Sales Operations, quantify each driver, and communicate a concise explanation of the result, outlook, risks, and recommended actions.
I use documented inputs, controlled refresh steps, automated checks where practical, and a clear reporting calendar. Before distribution, I reconcile key totals to source systems and prior-period trends, investigate exceptions, and perform a final presentation review so the output is both numerically sound and executive-ready.
An effective presentation leads with the business conclusion rather than the data dump. I focus on a small number of relevant KPIs, clearly explain material changes and their drivers, identify risks and opportunities, and make the requested decision or next step explicit while retaining detailed support in backup materials.
I would build a bottoms-up view using pipeline, historical attainment, territory capacity, seasonality, and account-level assumptions, then reconcile it to the top-down operating plan. I would highlight gaps, sensitivity cases, and dependencies, enabling leadership to set targets that are ambitious but grounded in operational reality.
I assess each request based on decision urgency, financial impact, dependency on other deliverables, and effort required. I communicate trade-offs early, align stakeholders on timing and scope, deliver a decision-useful first version when appropriate, and protect the accuracy of critical recurring reporting.

About the role:
We’re looking for a Finance Manager to join our Commercial FP&A team within Strategic Finance. This team member will own a diverse set of recurring deliverables and analyses that keep the business informed. The Commercial FP&A team acts as the analytical engine of the company, providing insights that support optimal business decision-making.
This role requires strong commercial finance acumen and a genuine interest in understanding the “why” behind the numbers. You’ll support the narrative behind revenue performance for the Senior Leadership Team and Board-level materials, partner with Commercial and Sales Operations teams on GTM reporting, and help maintain the reporting infrastructure that leadership relies on for in-quarter decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Own recurring revenue reporting workflows – daily/weekly file maintenance, revenue trackers, attainment dashboards, and variance analysis – ensuring accuracy and timely delivery at a daily cadence
- Prepare and update executive materials for KPI reviews, Board of Directors presentations, and SLT meetings, including slide updates, and supporting data files
- Conduct variance analysis on revenue movements and deliver clear, concise commentary that explains the “what” and the “why” behind performance trends
- Support quarterly sales target-setting – assembling bottoms-up data, reconciling against tops-down forecasts, and surfacing risks and opportunities for leadership discussion
- Own the commercial commission review process – synthesizing attainment data, identifying trends, and providing analysis that informs leadership’s compensation and incentive decisions
- Execute ad-hoc analysis for Revenue, GTM, and Commercial leadership to support in-quarter decision-making
- Maintain and improve core financial reporting infrastructure – identifying opportunities to enhance accuracy, reduce manual effort, and improve consistency across deliverables
- Partner cross-functionally with Revenue, Sales Operations, and GTM teams to understand business drivers and translate them into financial context
- Apply a common-sense quality check to all outputs – flagging anomalies, verifying data integrity, and ensuring deliverables are clean and free of error
- Exercise independent judgment in prioritizing analyses and sequencing deliverables to maximize impact for commercial leadership
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with 6+ years experience
- Expert-level Excel and Google Sheets skills – can build, troubleshoot, and maintain complex reporting files independently
- Strong data analysis capabilities with the ability to work across multiple data sources and reconcile discrepancies
- Excellent communication skills – can format data clearly for executive audiences and draft concise commentary
- Experience supporting executive-level reporting (KPI reviews, Board materials, SLT presentations)
- Ability to ramp quickly on existing processes and deliver reliably with minimal hand-holding
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
- Experience in commercial finance / sales finance, preferably in a high-growth or ad tech environment
