The role, at a glance.
Ruby Labs is seeking a technically capable accounting professional to build agentic AI systems that automate enterprise accounting operations. The role spans AP, AR, reconciliations, close processes, reporting, audit support, and data integrations across a multi-entity, multi-country environment. It requires practical Python or JavaScript/TypeScript engineering, AI coding-tool experience, APIs, SQL, and strong IFRS or US GAAP expertise. The successful candidate will design controlled automations with reliable audit trails rather than simple rule-based workflows. This is a remote independent-contractor role requiring collaboration within approximately four hours of CET.

Sample interview questions
I would separate extraction, validation, accounting decisioning, approval, and posting into controlled stages. AI could extract invoice data and suggest coding, while deterministic checks would validate vendor identity, PO matching, duplicate risk, tax treatment, approval limits, and balanced journal entries. I would retain source documents, confidence scores, decision logs, reviewer actions, and immutable posting references for audit support.
I would ingest bank and ERP transactions into a normalized data model, preserving entity, currency, value date, and source identifiers. Matching would use deterministic rules first, such as transaction IDs and exact amount/date logic, then scored matching for expected variances including fees, FX differences, and batching. Unmatched or low-confidence items would be placed in an exception queue with supporting evidence, while approved outcomes would feed reconciliation status and accounting entries.
I would restrict the agent to approved tools and least-privilege credentials, use a controlled chart-of-accounts mapping, and require balanced-entry, period, entity, and policy validations before any posting. High-risk journals, unusual amounts, intercompany entries, and low-confidence recommendations should require human approval. I would also use sandbox testing, versioned prompts and code, monitoring, rollback procedures, and complete logs of inputs, outputs, and approvals.
A strong example would describe building a script or service that pulls data from an ERP, bank, payment processor, or spreadsheet; standardizes and validates it; applies accounting rules; and produces exceptions or posting-ready outputs. The answer should include scheduling, error handling, test cases, reconciliation to source totals, and measurable outcomes such as reduced manual review time or improved close timeliness.
I would define a decision framework that distinguishes low-risk repeatable work from judgment-dependent cases. The agent can gather evidence, perform calculations, identify applicable policies, and draft a recommendation, but it should route material or ambiguous items—such as revenue recognition, bad-debt provisions, unusual contracts, or tax treatment—to qualified reviewers. Reviewer decisions should be captured as structured feedback to improve future triage without bypassing control requirements.

About the role
We are hiring an Accounting Automation Engineer to replace manual accounting work across a multi-entity, multi-country enterprise, using Claude Code and agentic AI.
You will use Claude Code and agentic AI, plus Python or JavaScript/TypeScript, to automate accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end close and the wider day-to-day accounting operation. You need strong IFRS or US GAAP knowledge to get the numbers right, because an automation that posts wrong entries is worse than no automation.
We build agentic AI systems and AI agents, not fixed step-by-step workflows. Experience with rule-based workflow builders such as n8n or Zapier is not relevant to this role.
Titles we will consider: Accounting Automation Engineer, Finance Engineer, Financial Systems Engineer, Technical Accountant (with engineering background), Accounting Systems Manager (with engineering background).
Key Responsibilities
The goal is to automate the repeatable core of enterprise accounting, with human review kept only where judgment is needed.
Accounts payable
Invoice capture and data extraction from PDFs and email, using AI where useful
Vendor matching, coding suggestions, and 2-way/3-way PO matching
Duplicate invoice detection and approval routing
Payment run preparation and vendor statement reconciliation
Accounts receivable
Invoice generation and delivery
Cash application and bank receipt matching
Aging reports, dunning and collections reminders
Credit note handling and bad debt/ECL provision support
Reconciliations
Bank and card reconciliations across all accounts and currencies
Balance sheet account reconciliations (prepayments, accruals, deferred revenue, fixed assets)
Intercompany and subledger-to-GL reconciliations
Exception reports that flag only the items a human needs to review
Month-end close
Close checklist tracking and scheduled reminders
Recurring, accrual, prepayment and amortization journals
Depreciation runs and FX revaluation
Trial balance checks, flux/variance analysis, and draft commentary
Management reporting packs
General accounting operations
Expense report and employee reimbursement checks
Chart of accounts and master data hygiene
Audit support: evidence collection, PBC lists, sample extraction
Data pipelines between ERP, banks, payment platforms and spreadsheets
Qualifications
Two things matter most, and we weigh them above everything else:
Strong knowledge of IFRS or US GAAP
Real experience with AI coding tools, ideally Claude Code, backed by solid engineering basics
We accept two paths: an accountant who learned to code, or an engineer who learned accounting. Both are judged on the same practical test.
Hands-on experience building automations with Python or JavaScript/TypeScript (either is fine)
Daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools, ideally Claude Code, with solid engineering basics, shipping working scripts and agents
Ability to run local scripts and schedule jobs (cron, task schedulers or CI pipelines)
Strong knowledge of IFRS or US GAAP, shown by ACCA, ACA, CPA or equivalent, or by several years of hands-on accounting experience
Experience with core processes: AP, AR, bank reconciliation, month-end close
Comfort working with APIs and MCP servers, CSV/Excel data and basic SQL
Care for accuracy, controls and audit trails
Nice to have
Experience in multi-entity or multi-currency environments, including intercompany and consolidation
Experience reconciling payment processor statements across multiple jurisdictions and currencies
Experience with shared cost services that invoice group companies, including complex expense splits and automated invoice generation
Experience with an ERP and its API (which ERP does not matter)
Experience building AI agents and agentic workflows, including tool use and MCP servers
Knowledge of VAT/GST and e-invoicing rules in several jurisdictions
Experience with Git, testing and basic cloud deployment
Prior experience in a finance transformation or accounting operations team
Additional languages, where our entities operate in non-English markets
