Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining availability, security, tenancy, and deployment requirements with platform and application teams. I would use managed Kubernetes where appropriate, implement infrastructure as code for cluster and network configuration, establish namespace and RBAC standards, and provide reusable deployment templates. I would also build in autoscaling, observability, backup and recovery procedures, policy enforcement, and tested failure scenarios.
I use modular, versioned Terraform components with clear ownership and documented interfaces. State is stored remotely with locking and access controls, while pull-request workflows run formatting, validation, security checks, and plans before approved applies. I separate environments through controlled configuration and accounts or subscriptions, and I regularly address drift, module upgrades, and lifecycle risk.
I first establish incident leadership, confirm customer impact, stabilize the service, and maintain concise stakeholder updates. I use telemetry, recent changes, and dependency analysis to isolate the likely failure domain, while assigning parallel investigation tasks where useful. After recovery, I facilitate a blameless root-cause review and ensure corrective actions include durable automation, monitoring, runbook, or architecture improvements.
I would track service availability, latency, error rates, saturation, deployment success and rollback rates, mean time to detect, mean time to restore, incident recurrence, alert quality, and infrastructure provisioning lead time. I would connect these measures to service-level objectives and review them with engineering teams to prioritize reliability investments. Capacity trends, cost efficiency, and security-compliance findings would complement the operational KPI set.
I would shift controls left by adding code, dependency, secret, container-image, and infrastructure-as-code scanning to pull requests and build pipelines. Policy-as-code would enforce baseline requirements before deployment, while runtime monitoring and centralized logging would detect issues after release. I would tune controls by risk, provide actionable feedback to developers, and partner with security teams to maintain exceptions, remediation workflows, and audit evidence.
