Sample interview questions
How would you design a permission model that supports organization, workspace, and content-level access while remaining maintainable as requirements evolve?

I would model permissions as explicit actions on resources, assign those permissions through roles, and define clear scope boundaries for organization, workspace, and content contexts. I would centralize authorization decisions in a well-tested policy layer, support inheritance only where it is predictable, and add auditability for permission changes and access decisions. I would also plan migrations carefully so new roles or permissions can be introduced without breaking existing access.

Describe how you would implement SSO and SCIM provisioning for enterprise customers.

I would support a standards-based SSO flow such as SAML or OIDC, with validated metadata, secure certificate or key handling, and clear tenant-specific configuration. For SCIM, I would implement idempotent user and group lifecycle endpoints, map external identities to internal users safely, and define behavior for deprovisioning and role changes. I would add observability, retry-safe processing, detailed admin-facing errors, and thorough security testing for both integrations.

How do you balance shipping quickly with maintaining security and reliability in an identity platform?

I identify non-negotiable security controls early, such as secure session handling, authorization enforcement, audit logging, and threat modeling for sensitive changes. I then break delivery into incremental releases protected by feature flags, automated tests, monitoring, and rollback plans. This enables meaningful progress without treating security or operational readiness as work that can be deferred indefinitely.

What approach would you take to improving a large existing Node.js and TypeScript codebase?

I would first understand the system’s critical paths, architectural boundaries, test coverage, operational signals, and current pain points. I would make improvements incrementally by adding characterization tests, strengthening type safety, extracting clear interfaces, and addressing high-risk dependencies or bottlenecks. For larger refactors, I would use migration paths and measurable success criteria rather than attempting a disruptive rewrite.

Tell us about how you would collaborate with product and design on an enterprise admin experience.

I would begin by clarifying the administrator’s jobs, risks, and decision points, especially where a configuration change can affect many users. I would help translate policy and technical constraints into understandable workflows, provide early prototypes or technical feedback, and define edge cases such as incomplete setup, conflicting settings, and recovery paths. After launch, I would use support feedback, product analytics, and operational data to improve clarity and reduce administrative errors.

About this role.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Admin & Identity and Access Management (Admin & IAM) team at Mural defines how users sign in, manage their identities, and access Mural’s products, as well as how administrators configure and govern their organizations. We own authentication & authorization, Single Sign-On (SSO), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), user provisioning (SCIM), session management, and the core permission model that powers roles and access control across companies and workspaces. We also own the enterprise administration experience; the configuration and controls that company and workspace admins use to manage their organizations and users. By providing secure, clear, and intuitive controls for users and administrators, we help organizations adopt Mural quickly and collaborate with confidence.

YOUR MISSION

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Admin & IAM team, you will design and ship these capabilities end-to-end, from identity primitives like the permission model and authentication flows to the admin surfaces enterprise customers use every day. Senior Engineers on Admin & IAM own complex technical initiatives, influence platform and security best practices, and collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Infrastructure to deliver secure experiences that feel simple and intuitive. You will report to an Engineering Manager and work with a small, focused team in a remote-first environment, with the option to work from our Buenos Aires office.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Build and evolve core identity and access systems that power authentication & authorization, SSO, user provisioning, session management, and permissions across Mural

  • Build and evolve the enterprise administration experience, including company and workspace configuration, user and content administration, billing, and internal admin tooling

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to design and ship secure, intuitive access and administration experiences for users and administrators

  • Prototype, implement, and maintain Admin & IAM platform features, contributing as a technical expert and supporting teammates through collaboration and mentorship

  • Own technical initiatives from design through implementation, rollout, and operational support

  • Build flexible, observable and maintainable solutions while being accountable for security, quality, performance, and reliability

  • Use AI tools as a part of your fundamental workflows to improve productivity, code quality, and system understanding

  • Contribute to technical design discussions, provide thoughtful code reviews, mentor teammates, and continuously improve the quality of the team’s engineering work

  • Contribute to continuously improving the team’s processes and engineering best practices

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • 4+ years building and shipping large-scale production software as part of an agile engineering team

  • Experience learning new technologies, platforms, and stacks, and getting productive quickly in large, existing codebases

  • An outcome-oriented and pragmatic interest in using AI-driven development practices to improve productivity, code quality, and system understanding

  • Strong experience building backend systems and APIs using Node.js, TypeScript / JavaScript, MongoDB, or comparable technologies

  • Hands-on experience building production user interfaces with React and modern frontend patterns

  • Proven ability to plan and deliver technical projects iteratively, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across product, design, security, and engineering partners

  • Experience working in a fast-moving or growth-stage environment, adapting to evolving requirements and priorities

  • Domain experience with identity and access management concepts such as authentication flows, authorization models, roles and permissions, SSO, SCIM provisioning, or session management

  • Experience building enterprise administration or B2B SaaS configuration surfaces, such as org management, billing, or admin dashboards
