Sample interview questions
How have you designed a scalable dbt data model for self-service analytics?

I begin by aligning with stakeholder definitions and identifying the required business grain. I model raw, staging, intermediate, and curated layers, use reusable macros and tests, document key fields, and publish governed marts that BI users can access safely.

How would you investigate and address a recurring data-quality issue in Snowflake?

I would quantify the issue, identify the affected source and downstream models, and add monitoring or dbt tests to make failures visible. I would then work with the relevant process owner to resolve the root cause, document the decision, and validate that downstream reporting is corrected.

What is your approach to enabling business users through BI tools without sacrificing governance?

I create curated semantic datasets with clear definitions, ownership, documentation, and appropriate access controls. I pair this with training on trusted metrics and dashboards so users can answer common questions independently while escalation paths remain clear for complex analysis.

Describe how you would choose between a no-code ingestion tool and a custom data pipeline.

I would evaluate source availability, connector reliability, volume, latency, transformation needs, cost, security, and maintainability. For standard SaaS sources, a managed tool such as Fivetran is often efficient; for specialized logic or strict performance requirements, a custom pipeline may be more appropriate.

How do you mentor junior analytics engineers while maintaining delivery momentum?

I use regular pairing, targeted code reviews, shared documentation, and progressively challenging ownership opportunities. I explain the reasoning behind modeling and quality decisions, set clear expectations, and create feedback loops that help the engineer grow while keeping work aligned to team priorities.

About this role.

What do we do?

Paddle offers digital product companies a completely different approach to their payment infrastructure. Instead of assembling and maintaining a complex stack of payments-related apps and services, we’re a Merchant of Record for our customers. That means we take away 100% of the pain of payment fragmentation. It’s faster, safer, cheaper, and, above all, way better.

We’re backed by investors including KKR, FTV Capital, Kindred, Notion, and 83North and serve over 10,000 software sellers in 245 territories globally.

The Role:

We are seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer to drive significant business impact by shaping our data infrastructure, developing robust data models, and promoting best practices in analytics engineering (e.g., data quality, documentation, and scalable data architectures). You will collaborate closely with business stakeholders to identify and deliver high-value data solutions and provide informal mentorship to junior team members, fostering their growth and enhancing team capabilities.

What you’ll do:

  • Create and maintain complex, scalable data models in Snowflake using dbt.

  • Expose datasets effectively in BI tooling to enable robust self-service analytics.

  • Perform simple data ingestion tasks using no-code tools and ensure streamlined data flows.

  • Add comprehensive metadata to datasets, including documentation, data quality checks, and sensitive data masking.

  • Activate data by pushing it from Snowflake into other operational tools.

  • Proactively identify and raise data quality issues to the respective process owners for resolution.

  • Lead training sessions and initiatives to drive adoption and effective use of BI tools across the organization.

  • Mentor junior analytics engineers, fostering knowledge-sharing and professional growth.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Extensive experience in analytics engineering or related data roles, with demonstrated expertise in advanced SQL, dbt, and Snowflake.

  • Proficient in using BI tools (e.g. Tableau, Looker, PowerBI, Snowsight) to deliver clear, actionable insights for business stakeholders.

  • Skilled in performing data ingestion and activation using no-code tools (e.g. Fivetran, Stitch), ensuring efficient data integration into operational systems.

  • Knowledgeable in managing metadata, documentation, data quality checks, and sensitive data masking effectively.

  • Effective at collaborating closely with diverse stakeholders, understanding their data needs, and delivering impactful solutions.

  • Experienced in conducting training sessions and providing informal mentorship to junior analytics team members, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
