Sample interview questions
How do you determine an appropriate auction estimate and reserve strategy for a bullion coin during volatile spot-price conditions?

I start with current spot price, metal content, dealer bid levels, recent realized auction prices, and the coin's numismatic premium. I then account for liquidity, buyer demand, condition, and the expected timing of the auction, setting estimates that remain competitive while clearly communicating any market-driven risk to sellers.

Describe how you would grow the supply of high-quality coins and bars on a marketplace.

I would segment potential suppliers by volume, product quality, reliability, and strategic fit, then prioritize established dealers, mints, and active collectors. I would use a clear value proposition around reach, pricing insight, trusted curation, and efficient onboarding, while tracking conversion and repeat-supply performance by segment.

What signals would make you adjust auction volumes or seller focus quickly?

I would monitor spot-price movements, premiums, bid participation, conversion, sell-through, average hammer price, submission quality, inventory availability, and geopolitical or macroeconomic developments. A meaningful shift in these indicators would trigger a review of timing, lot mix, estimates, and targeted seller outreach.

How would you protect buyer trust when assessing a coin or bar with uncertain authenticity or provenance?

I would pause or decline the lot until the necessary documentation, imagery, testing, and provenance review are complete. Where appropriate, I would seek specialist verification and ensure the listing accurately represents the item's condition and evidence, because long-term buyer confidence outweighs a short-term sale.

Give an example of how you would use auction data to improve category performance.

I would analyze results by product type, denomination, premium band, seller, estimate accuracy, auction timing, and buyer geography. If data showed strong conversion for particular bullion formats but weak sell-through for overestimated commemoratives, I would increase targeted supply in the high-performing segment and recalibrate estimate guidance for the weaker one.
