The role, at a glance.
Synthesia is seeking a senior applied Machine Learning Engineer to build the AI coaching engine for Roleplay Sessions, an interactive training product using AI avatars. The role focuses on production models that interpret learner responses, score performance, generate real-time feedback, and determine the avatar's next response. Candidates need at least seven years of software engineering experience, including two years at senior level, plus practical ML expertise and product-development judgment. The position operates in a fast-iteration, commercially focused engineering environment and is eligible remotely across Europe subject to compliance and right-to-work checks.

Sample interview questions
I would separate the flow into low-latency inference, evaluation, and feedback-generation components. The system would capture the response, extract relevant conversational features, apply rubric-aligned scoring models, and use a grounded generation layer to produce actionable feedback. I would define latency budgets, add fallbacks for model failures, and continuously evaluate quality against expert-labelled conversations.
I would explain the user problem, the evaluation metrics, and the operational constraints such as latency, cost, and reliability. I would show how I established a baseline, tested candidate approaches, and selected a solution that delivered sufficient quality within product requirements. I would also describe monitoring and iteration after launch.
I would combine offline and online measures. Offline, I would use rubric-based expert review for correctness, specificity, actionability, and safety; online, I would measure learner engagement, feedback adoption, completion, repeat practice, and skill improvement where available. I would review failure clusters regularly and use them to improve prompts, models, rubrics, or product UX.
I begin with usage patterns, data flows, service boundaries, reliability targets, and privacy requirements. I design for observable asynchronous and synchronous paths, versioned models and prompts, safe rollout mechanisms, and clear fallbacks. I also ensure evaluation data, feature pipelines, and monitoring are integrated so the system can improve without destabilizing customers.
I would align stakeholders on the decision to be made, identify the highest-risk assumptions, and build the smallest experiment that can produce evidence. I would communicate trade-offs clearly, ship an instrumented initial version, and use the results to guide the next iteration. This approach maintains momentum while avoiding overinvestment in unvalidated solutions.

About the role
Synthesia Roleplay Sessions is a training tool that lets people practice real conversations with AI avatars. Instead of just watching training videos, learners do interactive roleplay exercises, like practicing a sales pitch or handling a customer complaint with an AI coach. The AI gives instant feedback so people know what they did well and what to improve.
Managers can use a dashboard to track which employees have completed their training, see how well they performed, and measure if the training actually improved their skills. The whole platform is built around learning by doing rather than just passive video watching.
For your ML engineer role, you’d be building the AI engine that makes the coaching work. That means creating the models that listen to what learners say during roleplay, score their performance, generate helpful feedback in real time, and decide how the AI avatar should respond next based on what the learner does.
This is an applied ML position, not a research one. We expect you to have a good understanding of ML but on the other side to be a good product-focused software developer as you will be expected to work on different products.
Please bring with you:
Ability to apply your machine learning knowledge to solve real product problems.
At least seven (7) years of experience as a software engineer, with at least 2 years at senior level.
Experience in a high-performing engineering team operating at scale, whether in a scale-up or established organisation recognised for strong engineering culture.
Strong alignment with commercial success.
Pragmatism and bias towards action. This role requires comfort with fast iteration.
