Fleetio is seeking a senior software engineer to build and scale its Marketplace platform for fleet maintenance shops, service workflows, payments, billing, and transaction data. This engineer will partner closely with product, design, quality engineering, and peers on feature planning, architecture, delivery, and code reviews. The position calls for 10+ years of software engineering experience, strong written communication, and the ability to solve complex product and architectural problems in a fast-moving environment.

Sample interview questions
I would model the workflow as explicit domain states, such as requested, approved, in progress, completed, invoiced, and paid, with clear transition rules and audit records. I would use idempotency keys for payment and webhook processing, transactional updates where appropriate, and asynchronous jobs for external integrations. I would also define failure handling, reconciliation processes, and observability around critical financial events.
I would first capture the actual query, execution plan, frequency, and user impact using application and database monitoring. I would check indexes, join strategy, row estimates, unnecessary selected columns, N+1 behavior, and pagination. After validating a targeted change such as an index, query rewrite, eager loading, or data-model adjustment, I would benchmark it and monitor production performance for regressions.
I isolate the provider behind a well-defined integration layer and make all inbound and outbound operations idempotent. I use retries with backoff, timeouts, dead-letter handling, durable event records, signature validation, and structured logs. I also provide monitoring and reconciliation tools so the team can identify and resolve mismatched states without affecting the core product workflow.
I clarify the customer problem, success criteria, edge cases, and constraints early, then outline feasible implementation options with trade-offs. For significant uncertainty, I propose a time-boxed prototype or spike and share results in clear written form. This enables the team to make an informed scope decision before committing to a full implementation.
I prioritize small, reviewable changes, automated tests at the appropriate levels, clear acceptance criteria, and incremental releases. I use peer review to improve correctness and share context, while relying on feature flags, monitoring, and rollback plans to reduce release risk. I also address recurring quality issues through better abstractions, tooling, documentation, and team agreements rather than relying on manual vigilance alone.
