Sample interview questions
I would first identify a specific onboarding friction point using funnel and qualitative customer data, then define a hypothesis and a primary success metric such as activation rate. I would implement a controlled experiment through a feature flag, monitor guardrail metrics such as errors and retention, and review statistical and customer-feedback results before deciding whether to iterate, roll out, or stop the change.
I clarify the user workflow, success criteria, states, and API contract with product and design partners. I create typed components and data interfaces, handle loading, empty, error, and permission states, and keep UI logic modular and accessible. I add unit and integration tests for key behavior, validate performance with realistic data, and use code review to ensure the implementation is maintainable.
I would confirm the data definition and instrumentation first, then segment the result by user cohort, account type, platform, and workflow step to locate the change. I would review release timing, error monitoring, session evidence, and customer feedback, then reproduce likely issues. Based on findings, I would propose a rollback, targeted fix, or follow-up experiment and communicate the impact clearly to stakeholders.
I use an appropriately lightweight design for the experiment while maintaining clear interfaces, tests for critical paths, and documented feature-flag ownership. I set an expiry or decision date for each flag and schedule cleanup after the experiment concludes. For validated experiments, I refactor the successful path into durable production architecture before broad rollout.
I would begin with observability: measure request latency, inspect query plans, and identify whether the bottleneck is query shape, indexing, N+1 access, or excessive data transfer. I would reduce selected data, preload required associations, add or adjust indexes based on query patterns, and verify improvements with representative load. Finally, I would add regression coverage and monitoring so performance remains visible as usage grows.
