Sample interview questions
Describe a data pipeline you designed from initial requirements through production rollout.

I would explain how I clarified the business outcome, selected storage and processing technologies, defined data contracts and quality checks, implemented orchestration and observability, and used staged deployment to validate performance and correctness before full release.

How do you make Python and SQL data pipelines maintainable as they grow?

I use modular components, version-controlled transformations, clear interfaces and ownership, automated unit and integration tests, consistent SQL style, documentation, and monitoring for freshness, volume, schema changes, and data-quality failures.

When would you use asynchronous processing, streaming, or multithreading in a data system?

I choose based on workload characteristics: asynchronous I/O for many external API calls, streaming for low-latency event processing, and multithreading where concurrent I/O or safely parallel work improves throughput. I also design for idempotency, retries, backpressure, and operational monitoring.

How would you work with product and ML teams to prioritize a new data initiative?

I would align on the user and business outcome, identify the decisions the data should enable, assess source quality and delivery risks, define measurable success criteria, and sequence work to deliver a useful, reliable increment early while preserving a path to scale.

What metrics and alerts would you implement for a production ETL pipeline?

I would track execution success, latency, data freshness, record volumes, null and duplicate rates, schema drift, error rates, retry counts, and downstream availability. Alerts should be actionable, severity-based, and linked to runbooks and clear ownership.
