Sample interview questions
How would you design a subscription lifecycle platform that handles plan changes, cancellations, billing correctness, and fulfillment coordination?

I would model the subscription as an explicit state machine with immutable domain events for transitions such as activation, renewal, plan change, pause, cancellation, and fulfillment. I would use idempotent APIs, durable workflow orchestration, transactional boundaries around billing actions, and reconciliation jobs to identify and correct inconsistencies across dependent systems. Clear ownership boundaries, audit trails, and operational dashboards would make the system safer to evolve.

Describe how you would improve the reliability and performance of a high-traffic backend service.

I would first establish service-level objectives and inspect latency, error, saturation, and dependency metrics to identify the largest contributors. I would prioritize changes such as query optimization, caching, asynchronous processing, connection-pool tuning, rate limiting, and resilience patterns where supported by data. I would validate improvements through load tests, staged deployment, and ongoing dashboards and alerts tied to customer-facing outcomes.

How do you lead a technical initiative involving commerce, clinical care, pharmacy, and fulfillment teams?

I begin by aligning stakeholders on the customer problem, desired measurable outcomes, domain boundaries, and decision-making process. I create a lightweight architecture proposal that documents interfaces, risks, phased milestones, ownership, and migration plans, then invite early feedback from each affected team. Throughout execution, I communicate trade-offs clearly, resolve ambiguity quickly, and use shared metrics to maintain alignment.

What practices would you use to make distributed workflows safe to retry and operate during incidents?

I design every workflow activity to be idempotent, associate operations with stable correlation and idempotency keys, and distinguish retryable failures from terminal business failures. I use durable workflow state, compensating actions where appropriate, dead-letter handling, and clear observability for workflow status and dependency failures. Runbooks, alerts, and periodic recovery testing ensure the team can diagnose and remediate incidents quickly.

How would you use experimentation and analytics to improve customer activation and reactivation?

I would partner with product and analytics teams to define a clear hypothesis, target population, guardrail metrics, and success metrics before implementation. The platform would expose reliable experiment assignment, event instrumentation, and data-quality checks so results can be trusted. After analysis, I would help convert successful findings into durable product capabilities while documenting learnings from inconclusive or negative experiments.
