Sample interview questions
How do you prepare a mission-critical electrical system for initial energization?

I begin by confirming approved design documentation, equipment ratings, protection settings, grounding, labeling, test reports, and as-built records. I then establish a detailed energization plan with switching steps, hold points, communications protocols, contingency actions, and clear ownership, ensuring all safety controls and operational approvals are in place before proceeding.

What would you review during a site walkdown of a data-center electrical installation?

I would compare the installation to single-line diagrams, specifications, submittals, and applicable standards. Key checks include equipment configuration, phasing, conductor terminations, grounding and bonding, protection coordination, redundancy paths, labeling, clearances, monitoring, and any deficiencies that could affect safety or reliability.

How do you distinguish a cosmetic punch-list item from a material operational risk?

I assess whether the condition affects personnel safety, code compliance, electrical protection, maintainability, redundancy, monitoring, or the ability to operate and recover the system. A cosmetic issue may be documented for closeout, while anything that compromises fault protection, isolation, capacity, or failure-domain integrity requires escalation and correction before handoff.

Describe how you would respond to an unexpected issue during energization.

I would stop or hold the activity at the safest defined point, secure the system, and communicate the issue to the relevant stakeholders. I would collect test data and field evidence, identify probable causes with design and vendor partners, define corrective actions, update the switching plan if needed, and resume only after the risk is understood and approvals are restored.

How do you coordinate effectively with contractors, utilities, and operations teams on a high-risk project?

I use clear written procedures, structured readiness reviews, unambiguous ownership, and frequent field communication. I make risks and decision gates visible early, ensure every party understands the operational impact of changes, and maintain disciplined documentation so that turnover records accurately reflect the installed and tested system.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform site walkdowns to verify installed electrical systems against approved designs, single-line diagrams, specifications, submittals, and Lambda standards.

  • Validate equipment ratings, protection settings, phasing, grounding and bonding, terminations, labeling, redundancy, and electrical failure domains.

  • Identify installation deficiencies, design conflicts, and operational risks; document punch-list items and drive them through closure.

  • Review construction test results and witness factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, functional testing, and integrated systems testing.

  • Develop and review energization plans, MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, switching procedures, and electrical safety controls.

  • Support initial energization and troubleshoot issues involving substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, busway, PDUs, RPPs, and rack-level distribution.

  • Coordinate with design engineers, engineering partners, utilities, general contractors, electrical trades, equipment manufacturers, commissioning agents, operations, and HPC deployment teams.

  • Confirm that electrical capacity, voltage, redundancy, monitoring, and protection are ready before IT equipment is energized.

  • Validate as-built documentation, equipment settings, test reports, commissioning records, and turnover packages before operational handoff.

  • Capture field lessons and incorporate them into Lambda’s design standards, commissioning requirements, and site-validation playbooks.

  • Mentor other engineers and provide senior technical leadership during high-risk energization and bring-up activities.

You

  • Have significant experience delivering, commissioning, or operating electrical systems in data centers, mission-critical facilities, utilities, or large industrial environments.
