Sample interview questions
How would you tailor a Harness demonstration for both executive and technical stakeholders?

I would begin with discovery to identify the customer’s delivery bottlenecks, risk concerns, and business goals. For executives, I would emphasize outcomes such as faster releases, reduced cloud spend, and stronger governance; for technical stakeholders, I would show the relevant workflows, integrations, controls, and implementation approach. I would end with agreed success criteria for a proof of value.

Describe how you would troubleshoot a technical issue during a customer evaluation.

I would first clarify the observed behavior, expected outcome, environment, and recent changes. I would gather logs, configuration details, and reproducible steps, then isolate whether the issue is related to the platform, integration, permissions, infrastructure, or customer configuration. I would communicate progress clearly and involve the appropriate engineering or support resources while maintaining ownership of the customer experience.

What role does Terraform play in a modern DevOps environment?

Terraform enables infrastructure as code, allowing teams to provision and manage cloud infrastructure through version-controlled, repeatable configurations. It supports consistency across environments, reduces manual changes, and fits well into CI/CD workflows. In a sales engineering context, I would connect Terraform capabilities to governance, developer productivity, and reliable delivery processes.

How do you convert a customer’s business problem into a technical value proposition?

I connect the stated problem to measurable operational impact, such as slow release cycles, deployment failures, security risk, or excessive cloud cost. I then map the relevant platform capabilities to those outcomes and validate the connection with the customer’s technical and business stakeholders. A strong value proposition includes agreed metrics, a clear implementation path, and evidence gathered during the evaluation.

How would you respond to an RFP with requirements that are not fully supported by the current product?

I would provide an accurate response that distinguishes native capabilities, viable workarounds, roadmap items, and unsupported requirements. I would avoid overcommitting, gather context on the requirement’s importance, and work with product and engineering teams to validate possible options. I would also help the sales team position the overall solution based on the customer’s highest-priority outcomes.
