Sample interview questions
How would you establish a technical roadmap for a knowledge graph platform with multiple internal customers?

I would begin by mapping priority use cases, consumers, data sources, and current reliability gaps. I would define a small set of platform capabilities such as entity resolution, ontology governance, serving APIs, lineage, freshness, and quality measurement, then sequence work based on customer impact and foundational dependencies. The roadmap would include explicit service contracts, adoption milestones, and measurable SLOs.

What metrics would you use to evaluate the health of a production knowledge graph?

I would use coverage, freshness, correctness, completeness, entity-resolution precision and recall, lineage completeness, query latency, API availability, and downstream consumer adoption. I would also define domain-specific quality measures with data owners and monitor regressions through automated validation and safe change-management processes.

Describe how you would use LLMs or agentic workflows in knowledge graph construction safely.

I would use LLMs for candidate extraction, relationship discovery, ontology mapping, and enrichment, but keep deterministic validation and provenance at the center of the workflow. Outputs should be confidence-scored, traceable to source data, evaluated against labeled benchmarks, and routed through human review or automated guardrails for high-impact changes. Production release criteria should include quality thresholds, rollback paths, and monitoring for drift.

How do you balance hands-on technical involvement with managing and developing a senior engineering team?

I stay close to architecture, key design reviews, and difficult tradeoffs while ensuring engineers own implementation decisions and outcomes. I use one-on-ones, clear goals, feedback, and delegation to develop technical leaders rather than becoming the team bottleneck. I contribute directly when it unlocks the team or resolves a high-leverage risk.

How would you drive adoption of a shared platform when product teams have competing priorities?

I would treat internal teams as customers and demonstrate value through a small number of high-impact use cases, easy integration paths, useful documentation, and reliable support. I would establish joint success metrics, publish platform capabilities and constraints transparently, and use feedback to improve self-service workflows. Consistent delivery against service commitments builds the trust needed for broader adoption.

Who We Are:

The Knowledge Graph Platform team builds the foundational systems that help Reddit understand entities, relationships, and context across its content. We are evolving an advanced, AI-powered knowledge graph into a reliable, scalable platform that enables teams across Reddit to build better experiences on top of shared, high-quality knowledge.

This is a high-leverage team at the intersection of data, platform engineering, and AI. Our work supports emerging capabilities such as contextual grounding while creating the contracts, standards, and developer experience that make shared data dependable and easy to use. This team is strategically positioned to impact both ads and consumer roadmaps. Our data is used across ads marketplace models as well as user-facing features on reddit.com.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers building Reddit’s Knowledge Graph Platform; create a high-trust, high-performing environment with clear goals and strong technical ownership.
  • Set the technical direction and roadmap for a scalable knowledge graph platform, including data and API contracts, service interfaces, reliability, observability, performance, and developer experience.
  • Leverage SOTA LLM and agentic patterns for knowledge graph construction.
  • Establish production-grade operating standards: defining SLOs, implementing quality measures of data within the knowledge graph, governance mechanisms, and safe change-management practices.
  • Partner with engineering, computational linguists, and domain-expert teams to define a shared operating model for ontology, data quality, governance, and platform evolution.
  • Be a steward of data in the KG – ensure the graph has the coverage and freshness needed for priority use cases. Work with our dedicated data labeler team on shared goals around data coverage and quality.
  • Work closely with internal product and engineering teams to understand their needs, prioritize high-value use cases, and increase access to the platform.
  • Drive the next wave of graph-powered capabilities, including opportunities in shopping, search, ads marketplace models, consumer feed models.
  • Stay close to architecture and technical design, helping the team navigate complex system tradeoffs and contribute hands-on when it is the highest-leverage path.
  • Communicate the team’s strategy, priorities, risks, and progress clearly across a distributed, cross-functional organization.

Who You Might Be:

  • 8+ years of total software engineering experience, with 2+ years directly managing, coaching, and developing engineering teams.
  • Experience with knowledge graphs, semantic or ontology systems, entity resolution, search, or contextual grounding is highly desired.
  • Experience building or operating AI/ML powered, or data-intensive platforms, with a proven track record of leading shared technical systems with multiple internal customers.
  • Strong understanding of how to turn a technical system into a product-like platform: setting an operating model with customers, establishing data or service-level contracts, useful documentation, and a path to self-service adoption.
  • Experience establishing data contracts around quality, lineage, or governance.
  • Strong technical judgment across distributed systems, backend services, data platforms, APIs, reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Comfortable making technical and product tradeoffs in ambiguity, including when a dedicated product manager is not present.
  • Excellent collaborator and communicator who can earn trust with engineers, senior leaders, and partner teams across time zones.
  • Enjoy building clarity and durable operating mechanisms where ownership and processes are still evolving. Excel in evangelization and driving platform adoption cross org.
