Sample interview questions
I would first map the current close calendar, dependencies, reconciliations, and approval bottlenecks. I would standardize account ownership, automate recurring reconciliations and journal entries where appropriate, define materiality thresholds, and publish a close checklist with daily status reporting. I would then track close-cycle metrics and address root causes each month until the process is predictable.
I begin with the target chart of accounts, entity structure, data ownership, and required reporting outputs. I validate transaction mappings, cut-off rules, revenue recognition implications, approval workflows, and exception handling before implementation. After testing reconciliations between source systems and the general ledger, I establish monitoring controls and documented operating procedures.
I focus on the operational question rather than presenting raw financial detail. I use concise dashboards and scenarios that connect key drivers such as headcount, pricing, utilization, or spending to cash flow and plan variance. I clearly state the decision required, the trade-offs, and the recommended action.
I would prioritize clean and timely financial statements, documented accounting policies, balance-sheet reconciliations, revenue support, entity-level reporting, and a well-organized data room. I would also assess control gaps, normalize nonrecurring items, validate key metrics, and ensure management can explain historical variances and forward-looking assumptions.
I would create a driver-based forecast that uses a manageable number of operational inputs linked to revenue, costs, headcount, and cash. I would compare forecast assumptions with actual performance monthly, maintain base, upside, and downside scenarios, and update the model when leading indicators change. The goal is not false precision; it is timely, decision-useful visibility into the company’s likely outcomes.
