Sample interview questions
I first review the contract terms, sales order, billing schedule, and applicable revenue-recognition policy. I reconcile billed amounts to earned revenue, record an accrual or deferral as appropriate, document the rationale, and ensure the balance reverses or amortizes correctly in future periods.
I analyze aging, payment history, customer-specific risk factors, disputes, credit information, and subsequent cash receipts. I apply the company’s reserve methodology consistently, prepare support for any adjustment, and communicate material risks to management.
I would establish controls over contract setup, approval of sales-order changes, billing-to-revenue reconciliations, review of deferred-revenue schedules, and period-end journal entries. I would also maintain clear supporting documentation and investigate exceptions promptly.
I use structured data models, lookup functions, pivot tables, and Power Query to standardize imports, reconcile large datasets, and automate repeatable close analyses. I validate outputs against source systems and preserve audit-ready documentation for the process.
I would quantify the change by customer, product or lease category, and timing driver, then separate recurring activity from one-time items. I would provide a concise explanation supported by reconciled data, identify accounting impacts such as deferrals or accruals, and note any risks or follow-up actions.
