Sample interview questions
How would you design a resilient integration with an external payment gateway?

I would isolate the gateway behind a provider interface, use idempotency keys for payment requests, enforce timeouts and retry policies with backoff, and distinguish transient failures from business declines. I would also persist request and reconciliation states, secure secrets through a vault, and add monitoring and alerts for failed or delayed transactions.

What practices do you use when building scalable REST APIs in .NET?

I define clear resource contracts, validate input consistently, use appropriate status codes, and keep controllers thin by placing business logic in services. For scalability, I use asynchronous I/O, pagination for collection endpoints, caching where appropriate, structured logging, and automated tests for both happy paths and error conditions.

How do you approach Entity Framework Core performance issues?

I first measure the issue through traces and database-level query analysis. Typical improvements include projecting only required fields, avoiding N+1 queries, using AsNoTracking for read-only operations, indexing frequently queried columns, batching writes, and using compiled or raw queries only when profiling demonstrates a need.

How would you protect sensitive commerce and payment data in a backend service?

I would minimize collection of sensitive data, avoid storing card data where tokenization is available, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and apply least-privilege access controls. I would use managed secret storage, audit sensitive operations, sanitize logs, and maintain secure dependency, authentication, and authorization practices.

Describe how you would collaborate with finance and product teams on a billing feature.

I would begin by clarifying business rules, lifecycle states, reporting requirements, edge cases, and acceptance criteria with both teams. I would translate these into an observable technical design, share trade-offs early, deliver iteratively with test scenarios, and validate the implementation against finance reconciliation and customer experience needs.
