Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a securities transfer that has failed to settle?

I would first validate the instruction details, including ISIN, quantity, account details, settlement date, and matching status. I would compare internal records with custodian information, identify the cause of the break, contact the relevant counterparty where necessary, document actions, and follow the case through to resolution.

What controls would you use when reconciling securities and cash positions?

I would reconcile internal ledgers against custodian statements and settlement confirmations, investigate differences promptly, and maintain an audit trail for each adjustment or exception. I would also use standardized checklists and escalation thresholds to ensure material breaks are addressed on time.

Why is preserving PEA tax history important during an account transfer?

PEA tax treatment depends on the plan's history, including its opening date and prior events. Accurate review and recording of the bordereaux d'information helps ensure continuity of that history and reduces the risk of incorrect tax treatment for the client.

How would you prioritize several urgent requests from banks, brokers, and internal teams?

I would prioritize by settlement deadline, financial or client impact, regulatory relevance, and dependency on external counterparties. I would communicate expected timelines early, keep stakeholders updated, and escalate blockers that could put a settlement or service-level commitment at risk.

How could SQL or Python improve a securities operations process?

SQL can help retrieve and compare transaction, position, and status data across operational datasets. Python can automate recurring reconciliations, flag exceptions based on defined rules, produce KPI reports, and reduce manual errors while retaining appropriate review controls.

  • PEA tax continuity: Review and record PEA tax statements (bordereaux d’information) to ensure the plan’s tax history is fully preserved.

  • Registered shares: Process operations on French registered shares (conversions, de/registrations).

  • Reporting and continuous improvement: actively monitor SLAs and KPIs, write operating procedures and identify automation opportunities.

What you bring:

  • Education: Master’s degree (M1 or M2) in Finance, Banking, Economics or Law from a business school, engineering school or university; gap-year students and recent Master’s graduates able to sign an internship agreement are welcome.

  • Languages: You have native-level or bilingual proficiency in French (C2) and are comfortable working in English.

  • Experience: A first experience in banking, back office, middle office or securities operations is a strong plus, as is knowledge of the PEA, post-trade or Euroclear France.
