Sample interview questions
How do you balance hands-on technical leadership with people management?

I set clear ownership boundaries, stay close to architectural decisions and delivery risks, and delegate implementation ownership to senior engineers. I protect time for one-on-ones, coaching, planning, and removing blockers, using technical involvement where it has the greatest leverage rather than becoming a bottleneck.

Describe how you would improve delivery predictability for an engineering team.

I would first review the team's work intake, planning quality, dependencies, cycle time, and recurring causes of missed commitments. Then I would establish clear priorities, right-size work, make risks visible early, and run regular retrospectives that turn observations into measurable process improvements.

How do you approach a difficult technical decision involving product, design, and engineering trade-offs?

I clarify the customer outcome, constraints, options, risks, and reversibility of the decision. I invite the relevant partners into the discussion, document the recommendation and rationale, and ensure the selected approach has clear success measures and an accountable owner.

What is your approach to developing engineers with different experience levels?

I use regular one-on-ones to understand each person's goals, strengths, and growth areas, then provide appropriately challenging work, actionable feedback, and access to mentoring. I make expectations explicit and connect development plans to opportunities that benefit both the engineer and the team.

How would you handle a quality issue affecting customers while the team is under delivery pressure?

I would prioritize customer impact and stabilize the issue first through triage, communication, mitigation, and a clear incident owner. Afterward, I would lead a blameless review to identify technical and process gaps, assign follow-up actions, and adjust planning so the underlying risk is less likely to recur.
