Sample interview questions
I would first establish the scope, loss exposure, affected segments, and immediate containment options. I would coordinate investigators, document indicators of compromise, deploy temporary rules or review controls where appropriate, and communicate impact and next steps to stakeholders. After containment, I would lead a root-cause review and work with Data Science and Product to convert findings into scalable signals, model features, or workflow improvements.
I use segmented performance metrics rather than optimizing only for loss rate. I evaluate fraud prevented, false-positive impact, approval rate, customer friction, merchant risk tolerance, and operational cost by cohort. Decisions should be tested, monitored, and adjusted so controls target the highest-risk behavior without broadly penalizing legitimate customers.
I set clear investigation-quality standards, define competency expectations, and use regular coaching based on case reviews and observed skill gaps. Junior analysts receive structured playbooks and guided feedback, while experienced analysts take ownership of escalations, threat research, and process improvements. I also create opportunities for analysts to present findings so they develop sound judgment and stakeholder communication skills.
I would explain the decision in plain language, distinguish observed evidence from assumptions, and describe the business trade-offs involved. I would provide actionable recommendations, such as verification steps or monitoring signals, while avoiding disclosure that could help fraudsters evade controls. The goal is to build trust by being transparent, responsive, and focused on the merchant’s outcomes.
An effective playbook defines triggers, ownership, investigation steps, evidence standards, escalation paths, decision criteria, communications, and post-incident learning. It should be practical enough to use under time pressure while allowing analysts to apply judgment to novel attacks. I measure adoption and outcomes, review it after incidents, and continuously improve it as fraud behavior and product capabilities change.
