The role, at a glance.
ClickUp is seeking a senior brand design leader to own and evolve its visual identity across web, social, product marketing, launches, and campaign assets. The role centers on rebuilding and documenting a scalable brand design system with tokens, templates, component libraries, and guardrails. This designer will independently review AI-generated and agency creative while enabling non-designers to create consistently on-brand work. Success requires exceptional visual craft, systematic thinking, AI design-tool fluency, and comfort operating as the sole design authority. The position is a full-time remote role for candidates in the United States.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by inventorying all current touchpoints, assets, and recurring production needs, then identify inconsistencies and the highest-leverage patterns. I would establish core foundations such as typography, color, spacing, grids, and image direction before converting them into reusable components, templates, and clear usage rules. I would validate the system through real campaign and web work, iterating based on adoption and output quality.
I define explicit visual principles, approved inputs, templates, reference examples, and review criteria before scaling AI production. I use AI for exploration and acceleration, but retain human judgment for composition, typography, messaging, accessibility, and brand distinctiveness. I also document common AI failure modes and build constraints that prevent them from recurring.
I would create a tiered toolkit with locked templates for common needs, flexible components for experienced users, and concise guidance for edge cases. Each asset would include approved content patterns, image treatments, and examples of both correct and incorrect use. Regular feedback and lightweight review workflows help improve the system while keeping design from becoming a bottleneck.
I prioritize reusable systems and modular page patterns so repeated work becomes faster and more consistent over time. I reserve direct design effort for high-visibility launches, new visual directions, and decisions with broad downstream impact. Clear intake criteria and a transparent prioritization process help protect both delivery speed and strategic brand investment.
I use AI tools to accelerate ideation, generate controlled visual explorations, organize documentation, and test content or layout variations. AI-assisted coding can help prototype interactive concepts and produce implementation-ready structures, especially when paired with a disciplined design system. I treat these tools as force multipliers, while maintaining design judgment, accessibility standards, and quality assurance.
About this role.
At ClickUp, we’re building the future of work: the first truly converged AI workspace unifying tasks, docs, chat, calendar, and enterprise search, all supercharged by context-driven AI. We are an AI-native company. Every team member is expected to leverage AI daily, and we evaluate AI fluency as part of our hiring process. Join us and help redefine what’s possible. 🚀
Summary: You’re the single point of excellence for ClickUp’s visual brand. You set the standard and ensure every touchpoint (from landing pages to social to product marketing assets) feels cohesive and world-class. But here’s what makes this different: you’re building a design system that AI tools and non-designers can produce bar-raising creatives on their own with your infrastructure. You build the guardrails that make everyone else excellent and ensure the company is never bottlenecked by design.
Responsibilities:
Own, maintain, and evolve ClickUp’s brand design system (tokens, components, patterns, guidelines), continuously elevating the aesthetic bar as the brand grows
Serve as quality gatekeeper: review and approve brand-facing creative produced by AI tools, vibe-coded outputs, and external agencies
Create and maintain design system documentation, templates, component libraries, and automation-friendly asset packages that enable others to produce on-brand work without design support
Design and ship high-volume web assets (landing pages, campaign pages, feature announcements) alongside high-impact brand moments like launches and keynotes
Audit and rebuild the brand design system from incomplete foundations, establishing documentation and structure where little currently exists
Requirements:
8+ years of brand/visual design experience, with significant time owning or leading a design system
Exceptional portfolio demonstrating mastery of typography, layout, color, motion, and systematic thinking
Actively uses AI design tools (Midjourney, Firefly, Claude Design, Figma AI, etc.) and AI-assisted coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) in their current workflow, with light familiarity with GitHub.
Has built or adapted design systems specifically to enable high-quality AI-generated outputs at scale.
Experience building design systems used at scale, including templates, component libraries, and constraints that enable non-designers and AI tools to produce on-brand output consistently
Experience QA’ing and refining AI-generated design outputs; knows where AI breaks down and how to build guardrails
Thrives as the sole designer on a team, making high-quality decisions autonomously with AI and tooling as force multipliers
