Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a customer report that translated pages are intermittently failing to load through a web proxy?

I would first establish the scope, timing, affected URLs, browsers, and environments. I would inspect browser network traces, proxy and origin responses, headers, DNS and TLS behavior, cache status, and relevant logs to form and test hypotheses. I would document reproducible evidence, identify a safe mitigation where possible, and provide Engineering with concise reproduction steps if a product change is needed.

Describe how you would make a production configuration change safely for a customer integration.

I would clarify the desired outcome and risks, validate the change in a lower-risk environment or against a limited scope, and prepare a rollback plan before deployment. I would schedule and communicate the change clearly, monitor key requests and error signals during implementation, and confirm the result with the customer. Afterward, I would document what changed and any follow-up actions.

What browser DevTools techniques do you use to diagnose a client-side web integration issue?

I use the Network panel to inspect request sequencing, status codes, redirects, headers, cookies, caching, and response payloads. I use the Console and Sources panels to identify JavaScript errors, CSP or CORS failures, and runtime behavior, and the Elements panel to validate selectors and rendered DOM changes. I also compare working and failing sessions or environments to isolate meaningful differences.

How would you explain a technical root cause, such as a CORS or caching issue, to a non-technical stakeholder?

I would start with the customer impact in plain language, then explain the cause using a simple analogy without obscuring the facts. For example, I might describe CORS as a browser safety rule that prevents one website from reading another site’s resources unless permission is configured. I would finish with the corrective action, owner, expected timeline, and any workaround.

Tell us about an approach for handling an urgent ticket with incomplete information and changing requirements.

I would quickly identify the user impact and stabilize the highest-risk issue first. I would state assumptions, gather the minimum evidence needed to test a hypothesis, keep stakeholders updated on progress and decisions, and adjust the investigation as new facts emerge. I would maintain a written timeline so that scope changes, findings, and next steps remain clear.

The Web Integrations Support Engineer is part of the Professional Services team at Smartling. The mission of the team is to help customers rapidly integrate Smartling solutions in a way that is sustainable and scalable. You will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of customer integrations based on Smartling’s GDN (web proxy) solution to ensure that the integration continues to meet customer needs as their sites change over time.

  • Build scripts and tooling, to make diagnosis and configuration faster and safer
  • Work with technical and business stakeholders to understand requirements and recommend sustainable solutions
  • Make changes to live production configuration with care: testing safely, planning for rollback, and telling customers what changed and why
  • Act with precision and urgency when customers are affected, and manage changing scope and ambiguity without losing momentum
  • Keep learning about new web technologies and contribute to process and tooling improvements

You Have

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with HTTP, HTML, CSS (including writing robust selectors), JavaScript and REST APIs
  • Strong skills with browser DevTools and network debugging, and an understanding of how pages are built and rendered in the browser
  • Working knowledge of proxies, CDNs, web servers, DNS/TLS and caching, plus web security basics (CSP, CORS, cookies, WAFs)
  • Comfort with regular expressions, plus the ability to write scripts (JavaScript, Python or Bash)
  • Experience diagnosing issues from logs and request traces (Quickwit, Grafana, Kibana, Splunk or similar)
  • A methodical, hypothesis-driven approach to complex problems
  • Excellent written and spoken communication, with the ability to advise and persuade both technical and non-technical audiences
  • The ability to drive outcomes despite complexity, ambiguity or shifting priorities

Preferred but not required

  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (React, Next.js, Vue) and client-side rendering
  • Familiarity with CMS platforms (e.g., AEM, Sitecore, WordPress, Contentful)
  • Hands-on experience with Nginx or similar proxy and web server configuration
  • Knowledge of SEO fundamentals (hreflang, canonical tags, sitemaps)
