AI Summary

The role, at a glance.

Mozilla is seeking a senior contract data analyst to improve the quality and usefulness of Gecko browser-engine telemetry across desktop and Android. The role builds executive-facing dashboards, audits instrumentation gaps, and develops methods to remove bot traffic and hardware-related noise. It also produces analyses that connect performance measures such as LCP and eTLD+1 with user experience and engagement outcomes. Success requires advanced SQL, statistical reasoning, visualization skills, browser-domain curiosity, and the ability to work independently with engineering, data, and product stakeholders.

Sample interview questions
How would you identify and mitigate bot contamination in browser telemetry?

I would profile suspicious traffic using behavioral, volume, timing, client, and event-pattern features, then validate candidate filters against known-good cohorts. I would implement transparent exclusion rules, measure their effect on key metrics, and monitor the rules for drift so legitimate users are not unintentionally removed.

Describe how you would investigate whether an LCP regression is affecting user engagement.

I would define the affected release and user cohorts, verify instrumentation consistency, and compare LCP distributions before and after the change. I would control for platform, hardware, geography, network conditions, and bot traffic, then use regression or stratified analysis to assess the relationship with engagement metrics and communicate both effect size and uncertainty.

What makes an executive performance dashboard useful?

It should focus on a small set of decision-oriented metrics, clearly show trends and guardrail breaches, and provide drill-down paths by platform, release, and key cohorts. I would document metric definitions, data freshness, and known limitations so leadership can interpret the information with confidence.

How would you find missing telemetry probes in a large codebase?

I would start with the product questions and desired user journey, map existing events to those questions, and identify blind spots in states, transitions, and outcomes. Then I would review relevant source code and instrumentation patterns with engineers, propose minimal high-value probes, and validate their schema, sampling, privacy, and downstream usability.

How do you work effectively when entering an unfamiliar technical problem space?

I establish the decision to be supported, review documentation and existing data definitions, and form small testable hypotheses. I use exploratory queries and experiments to learn quickly, seek targeted input from domain experts, and share assumptions and findings early so the work stays aligned with stakeholder needs.

Opportunity details

About this role.

The Gecko platform is the core engine of our product experience. To maintain competitiveness and user satisfaction, we must move beyond surface-level metrics to understand the deep correlations between engine performance and real-world user behavior. We currently face challenges with data quality, such as bot contamination in nightly telemetry, which obscures our understanding of true performance trends. A dedicated analyst is required to bridge the gap between engineering telemetry and actionable product strategy, ensuring that leadership has high-fidelity data to prioritize performance guardrails and technical budgets.

Engineering Deliverables

  • Automated Dashboards: Create and maintain high-level overview dashboards that translate complex performance data into consumable formats for Product Managers and leadership.
  • Telemetry Gap Analysis: Audit the Gecko codebase to identify missing collection points or “probes” necessary for a complete understanding of the product experience.
  • Data Sanitization Frameworks: Develop methodologies and tools to identify and filter data inconsistencies, specifically focusing on isolating bot traffic and hardware-specific noise from telemetry streams.
  • Behavioral Inference Reports: Deliver deep-dive analyses correlating technical performance shifts (e.g., LCP, eTLD+1) with user-facing pain points and engagement trends.

Scope, Skills, and Effort Estimate

Scope

The analyst will focus exclusively on Gecko engine telemetry across multiple platforms (Desktop and Android), collaborating with the Performance Team, Data Team, and Product Leadership.

Required Skills

  • Technical: Advanced SQL (BigQuery/Redash), proficiency in data visualization using AI tooling, and experience with statistical analysis (e.g., Pearson’s correlation, multivariate analysis). Knowledge of Rust/C++ is a strong plus. Strong proficiency with AI tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar is highly desirable.
  • Domain Knowledge: Ability to understand browser component interactions and their impact on user experience.
  • Soft Skills: Proven ability to work independently, translating technical requirements into business insights.
  • Independent problem solving: Comfortable working in unfamiliar technical problem spaces and figuring out a path forward with minimal guidance, using documentation, experimentation, source code, data, and other available resources.
