Sample interview questions
I would begin by aligning with Product, Risk, Finance, Commercial, and Operations on the market’s objectives, customer journey, risk appetite, and economic model. I would define a metric tree spanning acquisition, conversion, approval rates, activation, repayment, loss performance, contribution margin, and retention; then build reliable source data, documented definitions, dashboards, and review cadences. I would prioritize instrumentation and data-quality checks early, establish experiment standards, and iteratively refine the framework as product-market fit and portfolio maturity develop.
I would assess incremental impact using a controlled experiment or credible quasi-experimental design, rather than relying solely on before-and-after trends. The analysis would connect acquisition and conversion lift to incremental revenue, funding costs, servicing costs, fraud and credit losses, incentives, and downstream retention. I would present sensitivity scenarios and a recommendation based on contribution profit, payback period, risk trade-offs, and operational capacity.
I would first validate the metric definition, pipeline health, and freshness to rule out reporting issues. Next, I would decompose the shift by key dimensions such as market, merchant, channel, customer cohort, product flow, credit segment, and time, then quantify the largest contributors. I would form and test hypotheses with cross-functional partners, distinguish correlation from likely causal drivers, and conclude with a clear action plan, owner, expected impact, and follow-up measurement.
I start by defining the decision, primary success metric, guardrails, target population, and minimum detectable effect before launch. I ensure randomization and instrumentation are sound, monitor for sample-ratio mismatch and unintended risk or customer-experience effects, and analyze results with appropriate statistical methods. I communicate the business implications in plain language, including uncertainty and segment differences, so stakeholders can make a well-calibrated rollout decision.
I would set clear problem statements, quality standards, and decision deadlines, then match projects to each analyst’s development goals and readiness. Through regular reviews, I would coach on analytical framing, SQL and Python practices, experiment design, stakeholder communication, and concise storytelling rather than simply rewriting work. I would protect time for roadmap prioritization by using reusable templates, documented metric definitions, and delegation with accountable checkpoints.
