AI Summary

The role, at a glance.

Mozilla is seeking a senior contract data analyst to turn Gecko browser-engine telemetry into reliable product and engineering insights. The role builds executive-facing dashboards, audits telemetry instrumentation, and develops methods to remove bot and hardware-related noise from performance data. It requires advanced SQL, statistical analysis, visualization, and the ability to connect technical metrics such as LCP and eTLD+1 to user behavior. The analyst will work independently across desktop and Android telemetry while partnering with performance, data, and product leadership.

Sample interview questions
How would you identify and mitigate bot contamination in nightly telemetry data?

I would first profile traffic patterns by client attributes, event frequency, timing, user-agent signals, and improbable behavioral sequences. I would validate candidate filters against known-good cohorts, quantify their impact on key metrics, and implement documented exclusion logic with ongoing monitoring for false positives and drift.

Describe how you would connect an LCP regression to user-facing outcomes.

I would define affected cohorts by platform, browser version, hardware, and page context, then compare pre- and post-change performance distributions. I would model relationships with engagement and retention metrics while controlling for confounders, and present both the estimated impact and the uncertainty to stakeholders.

What makes an executive telemetry dashboard useful?

It should focus on a small set of decision-relevant, clearly defined metrics, show trends and meaningful segmentation, and make data quality visible. I would include drill-down paths for technical teams while keeping the top-level view concise, contextualized with targets or guardrails, and refreshed reliably.

How would you audit Gecko telemetry for missing probes?

I would map the user journey and relevant engine components to existing events, metrics, and dimensions, then identify where a hypothesis cannot be tested because observability is incomplete. I would review source code and documentation with engineers, prioritize probes by decision value and implementation cost, and define validation criteria before collection begins.

How do you work effectively when entering an unfamiliar technical domain?

I begin by forming explicit hypotheses, reviewing documentation and source code, and speaking with domain experts to establish a shared vocabulary. I use small reproducible analyses to test assumptions, document what I learn, and iteratively refine the approach while communicating risks and findings early.

Opportunity details

About this role.

The Gecko platform is the core engine of our product experience. To maintain competitiveness and user satisfaction, we must move beyond surface-level metrics to understand the deep correlations between engine performance and real-world user behavior. We currently face challenges with data quality, such as bot contamination in nightly telemetry, which obscures our understanding of true performance trends. A dedicated analyst is required to bridge the gap between engineering telemetry and actionable product strategy, ensuring that leadership has high-fidelity data to prioritize performance guardrails and technical budgets.

Engineering Deliverables

  • Automated Dashboards: Create and maintain high-level overview dashboards that translate complex performance data into consumable formats for Product Managers and leadership.
  • Telemetry Gap Analysis: Audit the Gecko codebase to identify missing collection points or “probes” necessary for a complete understanding of the product experience.
  • Data Sanitization Frameworks: Develop methodologies and tools to identify and filter data inconsistencies, specifically focusing on isolating bot traffic and hardware-specific noise from telemetry streams.
  • Behavioral Inference Reports: Deliver deep-dive analyses correlating technical performance shifts (e.g., LCP, eTLD+1) with user-facing pain points and engagement trends.

Scope, Skills, and Effort Estimate

Scope

The analyst will focus exclusively on Gecko engine telemetry across multiple platforms (Desktop and Android), collaborating with the Performance Team, Data Team, and Product Leadership.

Required Skills

  • Technical: Advanced SQL (BigQuery/Redash), proficiency in data visualization using AI tooling, and experience with statistical analysis (e.g., Pearson’s correlation, multivariate analysis). Knowledge of Rust/C++ is a strong plus. Strong proficiency with AI tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar is highly desirable.
  • Domain Knowledge: Ability to understand browser component interactions and their impact on user experience.
  • Soft Skills: Proven ability to work independently, translating technical requirements into business insights.
  • Independent problem solving: Comfortable working in unfamiliar technical problem spaces and figuring out a path forward with minimal guidance, using documentation, experimentation, source code, data, and other available resources.
